The pins on the diagnostic plug are not the same as shown on chilton manual

    auto zone did not have tester for this grand am "cross over" terminal thanks anyway

    Oh I forgot they only do the odb11 systems that 96 and up. So take it to your local shop and get the code read. Good Luck

Listings of the trouble for the various engine control system covered in this manual are located in this section. Remember that a code only points to the faulty circuit, NOT necessarily to a faulty component. Loose, damaged or corroded connections may contribute to a fault code on a circuit when the sensor or component is operating properly. Be sure that the components are faulty before replacing them, especially the expensive ones.

The Assembly Line Diagnostic Link (ALDL) or Data Link Connector (DLC) may be located under the dashboard, and is sometimes covered with a plastic cover labeled DIAGNOSTIC CONNECTOR.

  1. The diagnostic trouble codes can be read by grounding test terminal B . The terminal is most easily grounded by connecting it to terminal A (internal ECM ground). This is the terminal to the right of terminal B on the top row of the ALDL connector.
  2. Once the terminals have been connected, the ignition switch must be moved to the ON position with the engine not running.
  3. The Service Engine Soon or Check Engine light should be flashing. If it isn't, turn the ignition switch OFF and remove the jumper wire. Turn the ignition ON and confirm that the light is now on. If it is not, replace the bulb and try again. If the bulb still will not light, or if it does not flash with the test terminal grounded, the system should be diagnosed by an experienced driveability technician. If the light is OK, proceed as follows.
  4. The code(s) stored in memory may be read through counting the flashes of the dashboard warning lamp. The dash warning lamp should begin to flash Code 12. The code will display as one flash, a pause and two flashes. Code 12 is not a fault code. It is used as a system acknowledgment or handshake code; its presence indicates that the ECM can communicate as requested. Code 12 is used to begin every diagnostic sequence. Some vehicles also use Code 12 after all diagnostic codes have been sent.
  5. After Code 12 has been transmitted 3 times, the fault codes, if any, will each be transmitted 3 times. The codes are stored and transmitted in numeric order from lowest to highest.

The order of codes in the memory does not indicate the order of occurrence.
  1. If there are no codes stored, but a driveability or emissions problem is evident, the system should be diagnosed by an experienced driveability technician.
  2. If one or more codes are stored, record them. Refer to the applicable Diagnostic Code chart in this section.
  3. Switch the ignition OFF when finished with code retrieval or scan tool readings.

After making repairs, clear the trouble codes and operate the vehicle to see if it will reset, indicating further problems.

On 1994-95 3.4L and 3.8L engines, and all 1996 models, an OBD-II compliant scan tool must be used to retrieve the trouble codes. Follow the scan tool manufacturer's instructions on how to connect the scan tool to the vehicle and how to retrieve the codes.

I just bought a 1995 Grand Jeep Cherokee Limited V-8 - check engiine light comes on after driving awhile. I wanted to know how do you perform the diagnostic so I can check the code. A friend has the...


The plug should be located in the wiring harness on the drivers side under the hood. If you cant find it there look under the dash on the drivers side. There is also a on/off sequence in which you can make the check engine light actually flash out the codes. I have the manual for the grand cherokees. email me if you would like the key sequence to make this work.

Obd fault code p1698 check engine light on


The manual for the codes p1698 suggests that using the diagnostic readout box that you remove the plugs at the tcm and the pcm then by jumper ground the bus + and the bus - wires, one at a time at each plug and see whether the drb notices the grounding of each of those 4 wires by giving you a message "short to ground". If not for any one of those jumps. then trace the wiring from the plug to the diagnostic connector to find out where it is 'open'. I assume that the CCD + and - wires are never grounded in the normal state of affairs, so if you grounded pins 59 and 60 at the PCM and didn't see a ground by means of an ohmmeter to ground when you looked at 11 and at 3 of the diagnostic port, respectively, that would revel an open to be found. Similarly, if you grounded pin 4 and pin 43 of the TCM and didn't 'see' it at 11 and at 3 respectively then look for the opening in the wiring between the two points that didn't see it. Otherwise, with no other codes than those, and if you detect all the self-imposed shorts to ground, then the manual says to replace the modules whose wiring was proved to be OK.

When check engine indicator light came on in 1997 dodge grand caravan on and p1698 troubleshooting code appears, what does that mean?


The P1698 code means that no digital data is being received by the powertrain controller (on the left inner fender) from the transmission control module, located on the right inner fender. The manual says to check the ccd bus wires between the module and the rest of the system using the Chrysler diagnostic readout box. But if you don't have one then I think you can do the same thing by measuring for continuity (near 0 resistance) between pin 4 of its plug and pin 11 of the data link plug under the dash .
Then check the resistance between pin 43 if its plug and pin 3 of the data link connector. Finally check continuity from pin 7 of the data connector and pin 65 of the powertrain connector (pink wire). If the continuity between the transmission and data link connector wires checks as well as from the connector to the PCM proves to be ok, then according to the manual the trans controller should be replaced. But you should also verify that there is either a + or - bias voltage of 2.5 volts on each of those wires as a loss of bias voltage will also cause this code.

The jumper set should be the upper top right 2 pins. Sometimes the outside of the pin can be broken, however if you place your jumper ( I've even just used a paper clip) inside both terminals, it should give you a response. Make sure your jumper is placed firmly inside of both terminals, then turn your key.

1996 EXPLORER This TSB article is being republished in its entirety to include the 1995 4.6L Thunderbird/Cougar. ISSUE: After a 1-4 hour engine soak time, long crank times and/or long crank to start followed by a stall may occur on some vehicles. No further stalling or rough idle will occur after the engine is running. The long crank and/or stall may be due to the Idle Air Control (IAC) Valve sticking.
ACTION: Replace the IAC Valve with a revised IAC Valve if no Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs) are present. Refer to the following Service Procedure for details.
SERVICE PROCEDURE
  1. Perform normal diagnostics and correct any DTCs as required by referring to the appropriate year Powertrain Control/Emissions Diagnosis (PC/ED) Service Manual.
  2. If no codes are present, replace the IAC Valve by referring to the appropriate model/year Service Manual, Section 03-14. Refer to the following Idle Air Control Valve Application Chart for proper IAC usage.

MOST DIAGNOSTIC COMPUTERS CODE RETREAVERS ONELY GO BACK AS FAR AS 2006. BUT I HAVE A 1994 CHEVY LUMINA APV LS VAN, AND I BOUGHT A REPAIR MANUAL by CHILTON WHICH EXPLAINED HOW TO RETREAVED ERROR CODES WITHOUT THE USE OF A CODE RETREAVER. TRY THAT. OTHER WISE YOU MIGHT BE ABLE TO GET INSTRUCTION FROM THE MANUFACTORY.

I just need a manual showing which fuse is which on the 1995 Jeep Grand Cherokee. Don't have the "owners" manual that was original to the car. That would be a plus to find that also. Thanks!


Here in Wichita, KS the public library has factory manuals, which are much more informative than Haynes or Chilton. Check if your library does the same, then photocopy the page that shows the fuse block.

OBD 1.5 OBD 1.5 refers to a partial implementation of OBD-II which General Motors used on some vehicles in 1994 and 1995 (GM did not use the term OBD 1.5 in the documentation for these vehicles - they simply have an OBD and an OBD-II section in the service manual.)
For example, the 94-95 Corvettes have one post-catalyst oxygen sensor (although they have two catalytic converters), and have a subset of the OBD-II codes implemented. For a 1994 Corvette the implemented OBD-II codes are P0116-P0118, P0131-P0135, P0151-P0155, P0158, P0160-P0161, P0171-P0175, P0420, P1114-P1115, P1133, P1153 and P1158.[1]
This hybrid system was present on the GM H-body cars in 94-95, W-body cars (Buick Regal, Chevrolet Lumina ('95 only), Chevrolet Monte Carlo ('95 only), Pontiac Grand Prix, Oldsmobile Cutlass Supreme) in 94-95, L-body (Chevrolet Beretta/Corsica) in 94-95, Y-body (Chevrolet Corvette) in 94-95, on the F-body (Chevrolet Camaro and Pontiac Firebird) in 95 and on the J-Body (Chevrolet Cavalier and Pontiac Sunfire) and N-Body (Buick Skylark, Oldsmobile Achieva, Pontiac Grand Am) in 95.
Depending on the year and the vehicle, a car with the OBD 1.5 system may have either the older OBD-I connector, or the newer OBD-II connector, but they are electrically identical to each other.[citation needed]
The pinout for the ALDL connection on these cars is as follows:

Additional vehicle-specific diagnostic and control circuits are also available on this connector. For instance, on the Corvette there are interfaces for the Class 2 serial data stream from the PCM, the CCM diagnostic terminal, the radio data stream, the airbag system, the selective ride control system, the low tire pressure warning system and the passive keyless entry system.[2]
An OBD1.5 has also been used on Mitsubishi cars of '95 '97 vintage.
An OBD1.5 has been used in some 1995 Volkswagen VR6's (Juice Box's GTI)
