Question about 1998 Chevrolet Cavalier

Idling RPMs and other concerns

I have a 98 Cavalier Z24, and have been noticing a problem when idling at stops. It usually idles smoothly, but sometimes I will be stopped and my RPMs will start jumping up and down erratically. It only seems to happen after the car has been stopped for at least a minute or two. If I shift the car into park, the RPMs go back to normal. Another problem I've noticed is that the acceleration seems somewhat sluggish after being stopped. It seems to stutter for a second, and then takes off. This problem occurs very seldomly, and usually at a quick stop sign. I recently had an oil change and replaced the air filter, but the problem is that if I actually take it in to have someone look at it, they might not encounter these issues during a test drive since they don't happen all the time. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

It sounds like the fuel pressure regulator is leaking. This is easy to check. with the car idleing, remove the vacuum hose from the unit, and if it is leaking, gas will come out of the vacuum connection.
If this is the trouble, be sure the replacment unit has an o-ring with it, otherwise the new unit will leak at the fuel rail.

This could be the map sensor issue as well, but check the pressure regulator.

Also, check the hoses near the throttle body area, if there is a vacuum leak, it will do this.

Engine rocks really badly whilst idling.

Check for vacuum leaks. Rough idle, then smoothes out at higher RPMs is usually vacuum. Some times it can be a weak/worn cylinder.

check that you have connected all wires properly. Run fault codes to find the sensors that are affecting the engine running properly. If you have disconnected the battery the you may need to reset the CPU program with a code reader as the program may be corrupted.

When my 2005 chevy cavelier is idling (at stop lights, sitting in park, etc) where should the rpms be? I have a friend saying my rpms are too low when idling. Right now they are between 0 and 1. Thanks

Idle in park: 800-1100RPM is acceptable.
In drive: about 700RPM
Your idle speed is actually controlled by the idle air control motor also called the IAC. There isn't any idle adjustment you can manually set as the motor is fuel injected and EEC controls air and fuel mixture at idle.

Misses bad uses alot of gas

it probley has a bad coil. it has 3 coils so you need to find which one is bad. connect a test light to neg bat term. with engine idling poke test light through the plug boots at the coil one at a time. if it does not drop any rpms on one of the coil towers. that coil is the suspect. good luck.

Idle and stalling

Here is the most common cause of surges and stalls and low idle rough idle, it is the idle speed control air-bypass valve and throttle valve (IAC for short), they get full of gunk over the miles and cause idle issues (stalls, low idle) like yours, Get a can of intake cleaner from any local parts store, not carb spray, intake cleaner, it is made by a company called CRC, remove the air intake hose to the engine, hold the idle high so the engine won't stall, then spray the can of cleaner into the intake while keeping the engine running, use at least 1/2 the can, shut down the engine and disconnect the battery for 5 minutes, then restart and complete a number of mixed driving cycles, town, freeway, stop and go etc., after a few days the problem will go away as the system will relearn to the clean intake.
