Question about 1991 Dodge Dakota

1 Answer

No spark no fuel 1991 dakota 3.9 liter

Desperate
the only time the engine will start is when the check engine light in the dash comes on. but now the light does not appear and I cannot hear the fuel pump running. Is the fuel and spark connected in series on the same fuse?? I have changed the distributor the wires and rotor. the last time I had this problem I put the vehicle in a heated area it started right away.
thanks
Ken

Having the same problem with my 96 Dakota. I have replaced the ECU and Ignition pick up and still have the problem As long as the check engine light does not go on it will not start because the ECU is not getting power. It seems to be an intermitten problem so I'm thinking it's a short or broken wire. Any suggestions

Check to be sure the connections are good at the power to the battery. One part splits to the starter, the other to the truck's other electrical systems. Good luck

1991 hyundai scoupe; engine cranks but does not start, check engine light came on then off about three times before this occurred. Car has fuel, checked injectors, fuel pump, plugs, rotar. think it might...

You stated the 'CHECK ENGINE' light came 'ON'!... what/which DTC'S (Diagnostic Trouble Codes) OBDI were retrieved? In 1991, OBDI (1) was used. You could retrieve codes by either turning the ignition switch on/off two or three time within 3 seconds and the light would flash for each number (this way you could determine which system was affected). The POSSIBLE CAUSES are many:

Crank Position Sensor
Ignition Coils/Wires
Water/contaminated fuel
Electrical (Relay(s), fuse(s), Poor ground connections, failed ECU (Engine Control Unit), etc.

Are you getting a SPARK to the plugs?... if so, check fuel pump pressure
If you're not getting a spark to the plugs or not getting a fuel injector PULSE, then the crank position sensor MIGHT BE the problem.... NOT SURE!

Too many POSSIBLE or PROBABLE causes.

In order for an engine to RUN, it needs these things:

1. Air flow (intake AND exhaust)
2. Fuel (proper fuel to air mixture)
3. Compression (140 to 2?? psi)
4. Proper Timing (not too advanced/retarded)
5. Ignition (sufficient and at the correct/right time)

Now, after listing these 5 things, without CHECKING each one, your guess is a good as mine.

Check for the following: 1-Emissions system not fuctioning properly,2-Fault in the fuel or electrical system,3-faulty ignition system(craked spark plugs insulation or faulty plug wires)4-vacum leak at the trotlle body, intake manifold or vacum hoses,5- valve sticking,6-crossed plugs wires,7-valve timing incorrect. Hope this info helps. sammyc47.

if you have'nt replaced those spark plugs and wires lately, you need to.and also, lucas fuel treatment, in my personal opinion,is the very best for unclogging fuel lined and injectors.it being below a 1999 model and your check engine light is on, you can have it coderead for free if you're near anautozone or advance automotive parts store. they will code read it and tell you why that check engine lights coming on.hope this helps and thank you for choosing fixya.com

Have a 1999 dodge dakota sport 4 wheel drive with a 5.2 liter motor 158,000 miles my problem is every 3 or 4 days when i go to start it it in the morning will not start after about 5 or 6 times cranking...

a vehicles crank shaft sensor sends a signal to computer, as to tell what revolution the crank is on. you may not get a check engine light. check injectors for leaking in to cylinders, it can cause an excess amount of fuel in cylinder. this may be causeing the no starts and flooding smell. if it starts good warm then check the injectors for leaking. good-luck!! you may also have a bad coolant tempurature sensor. symtoms of a bad cts are--poor cold idle, stalling, slow idle speed, cold hesitation or stumble, poor fuel milage. ( will also ****** timing). its hard to say with out being there, so check out above. good- luck!!

Turns over but no start no spark 1991 dodge dakota 3.9 liter wont start no spark but turns over and suggetions

Could be crank position sensor. Could be low oil. Spark paks use a common ground in the ECU. Could have one pak blow the ECU ground. These can be repaired but the car is down while you send it out to be fixed. Get a used one from the salvage yard.

Check ECM (engine computer) located under glove box. Injector circuit output probably dead. Replace ECM. Go to Searchparts.com for best price.
