Question about 1995 Jeep Grand Cherokee

1 Answer

Hi there - I went to get my vehicle smoged, it failed. I'm in the process of buying it, and it had a passing score in February. I passed on the 'Idle' portion: (my car read at 0.3, max is 100) I failed the '2500 RPM' portion: At 2404 RPM, the max allowance is set at 1.00, my car registered at 1.31. The repair place said it'd cost $200 just to give an estimate of repair cost. (is this a rip?) Also - On the report, They call my car a Truck, I thought the Jeep Grand Cherokee was an SUV, and if they tested it as an SUV wouldn't it pass? Thank you, Lisa Walker

Try driving the vehicle around for 5 to 10 minutes before testing. the catalytic converter, which is what breaks down most of the pollutants, is heated by the engine exhaust and doesn't function efficiently until it is at about 1000 degrees Fahrenheit.

What is the benefit of purchasing a used car?

For me personally---- NONE

I have ONLY bought new vehicles & ordered them
from the factory, since I was 19 years old
That is 50 years running
BUT--I keep them 18 years & do ALL my own work

Your getting someone else's abused vehicle

People NEVER change the oil, spark plugs, fluids,
they do nothing & you can not do that with today's

If your buying a used vehicle, it has to be no more than
3 or 4 years old
You can not believe anything your told, about anything,
pertaining to a vehicle
You can not trust a dealer, as they add about $4,000
to what they take the vehicle in for
A used car lot, I have no idea,I wouldn't even go to one

Your best to buy privately & go to a persons home, only,
and have a list of questions

You MUST get an owners manual
It MUST be one owner
IT MUST have no more than 12,000 per year on it
So 45,000 miles or pass
If the transmission fluid has NOT been changed EVERY
3 years PASS,PASS,PASS, as it will fail before 100,000

Could write a book & go on all night

Not passing smog, no code or engine light

Its going to be tough to find the problem without access to a 4 gas machine. Especially if there are no trouble codes in the computer.
If the fuel mixture is rich it should set a code for one or both O2 sensors. Same thing if the EGR is not working, etc.
One thing that could cause problems is the thermostat not getting the engine up to normal temp.

I went to smog station calasty dont pass i drive olmost 300 miles still dont pass

You need to look at what exactly failed the vehicle. Most likely you have a Mixture issue or the catalytic converter has gone bad or possibly the O2 Sensor. Without further information it is very difficult to identify the problem.

Failed smog

We had to have the calatic converter replaced. We did this after doing an oil change, air filter change, and new spark plugs and still hadn't passed smog. After changing the calatic converter it passed smog with scores of 25.

Failed Smog: Have VIR report, 95 Jeep Grand Cherokee

You could install a new catalytic converter and oxygen sensor for under $200 instead of paying someone to tell you the same thing. If you go that route, you can get cheap parts at or just plain old Autozone. You just have to cut the old cat off and clamp a new one on. I did mine in about an hour. The O2 sensor is easy too. On a side note, make sure your car is drive at highway speed for around 20 minutes to ensure the cat is hot enough to properly work.

Failed Smog: Have VIR report, Need Insight:95 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Change the oil, run the car until it is really hot (the cat converter) and it should pass, did smogs for 30 years, this usually works.
