We took our Durango in for a diagnostic test at Auto Zone, and they told us it was the EGR Valve...but the guy could not find it on the engine to coach us through replacing it. I was wondering if you could tell me where to look?

Re: Location of EGR valve on 2005 Dodge Durango
If I had been him, I would have talked you into a Chilton or Haynes manual for your car.
They are easily detailed enough to show you the location and Iwould be surprised if a chain operation like AZ didn't have the right one on hand.

To install the EGR Valve on a 2005 Durango first it is necessary to remove the air intake hoses and palce them to the side. Next, in order to get the EGR valve you will need to remove the windshield wiper motor, which is a pain but necessary to do get to the EGR valve. After removing all of the itemsthat are in the way you will be faced with a task that will try your patience, the EGR valve is located on the right side of the motor, (as if you were facing the motor from the front) just behind and to the rear of the throttle body. After you locate it you will need a rachet with a flexible head because it is fairly difficult to reach otherwise. A mirror and light will also help so you can see what you are doing since the EGR valve is located in such a hard place to see and get to that you will only be able to see part of it while you are removing the screws. After removing the EGR valve, simply reversethe procedure and your done. P.S. I own a 2005 Dodge Durango SLT with a 4.7L engine and I replaced mine this year after a check engine light came on and I checked the code on the OBD. By the way the EGR valve is a pain in the rear to change. Good luck!
Check in the drivers side rear of engine take off the air housing and use 13mm. deep
socket w / 3inch ext. and air ratchet to remove 2 bolts, then take tire
off inner splash panel then 8mm wobble w / 24inch ext to take 1 tube bolts
loosen other one and pull out as ***. Reverse to install.
Hope this help to solve it (remember rated this post).
p0404 is-egr flow ckt range/performance, check egr, remove from vehicle and clean out carbon from valve and where it mounts on engine. also check the wireing connector and wire to valve. if this dosnt work, replace valve,
it could be several things but with out proper diagnostic equipment its pointless to get into it, some times its best to bring it to the dealer, they work on their vehicles more than other shops and know them better as you already know your EGR was changed cost you money and its still the same.hope this helps you
P406 is a EGR code, EGR will also cause a knocking/ pinging sound when there bad. Very common problem. The position sensor inside the valve goes bad. Your going to have to replace the whole EGR valve and it can put out variety of codes from P0401 to P0406. The new valve will solve the problem and easy to replace, you can pick one up at Auto Zone and they can give you the step by step instructions to replacing the EGR with common tools. Good luck and hope this helps.
if this is a 4.7l engine, the valve is on the left rear of the intake. loosen the 8mm bolts that hold the egr intake tube to the egr valve, remove the egr bolts, disconnect wiring, remove valve and tube together, attach intake tube loosely to new valve, install new valve, tighten tube bolts to egr using a swivel socket, this is not a 5 minute job, so dont attempt unless you have some time and patience.
