I had this problem with my 1996 nissan I removed the odometer and speedometer, I found that the screws on the back side which old all the circuit cables (flat with copper) were loose. I tightened the screws and have not had a problem since. You can go to AUTO ZONE and have them test the engine light issue and if the code comes back stating that there is a speed sensor err then have the reset the check engine light if this has solved you speedometer issue.

1) Remove the rear wheel speed sensor from the axle housing. 2) Connect a Digital Volt/Ohm Meter (DVOM) across the two sensor terminals and record the reading. 3) The reading should be between 0.8 and 1.4 k Ohms. If not, replace the sensor.
