Key won't turn in the ignition

Car is in park, the button on the shifter is in the out position-we tried turning the steering wheel while trying the key, but now the steering wheel is locked. We have 2 keys and have tried both. The car responds to the remote lock/unlock, the lights come on when you open the door.

Thanks so much for the advice-but it didn't work, so we had the car towed this afternoon and our mechanic says it needs a new ignition-the tumblers or whatever they are called -inside are shot. He is a family friend, so we trust his opinion. You were the only one to suggest that, so good thinking outside the box! I see what you were trying to achieve (car not in park-right?), hope it works out for someone else...thanks again!

Key won't turn in the ignition, steering wheel lock? What steps should i take to release lock? Thank you for any suggestions.

My car wont turn off! If I put it in park, and turn the key to shut it off, it wont go all the way down to off! And the motor is off, but lights is on, and I can't get my Key out of the ignition. I know the problem is the shifter wont go in to park, so I have to turn the motor back on, and take the out of park, and put it back into park till it clicks, and then I can turn my car off! Sometimes I can get away with just taking the car out of park, with out turning the motor back on!
My car was a victim of a milk truck! The milk truck ran over my car pushing it a good 50 ft while it was in park! Before the man realized he ran over my car!
    Can you help me!?!?!?

I know this is going to sound crazy!! Jus try hitting the top of your shifter and see if that helps your turn your key in the ignituition

Didn't have to hit the shifter, just push it towards the park position until you hear or feel it click, mine showed it was in park, but still had that little extra click that wouldn't allow the key to turn off. I was getting worried and decided to google the fix. Thank you.

SOURCE: 2004 Santa Fe Ignition switch locked

I just had this happen to me yesterday with my 2002 Santa Fe. After trying everything (jiggling steeling wheel, shaking the car, you name it we tried it). We got a chain and pulled the car ahead about 2 feet. That didn't seem to do anything but we then pulled up the emergency brake into the lock position and tried to start the car (with the ER brake on) and it worked!!! The steering wheel came unlocked and the car started up. Don't know if it was the pulling of the car that broke something free or if it was the ER brake, but that was what worked for me.

SOURCE: Key stuck in the ignition. Position indicator

Hi there,
try turning the wheel to the right/left while turning the key in the ignition. You have to apply some force. Your car is probably outliving its road life.

Key stuck in ignition car stuck in park key won't go to off position

There may be to much pressure on the steering wheel lock for it to go into the off position. put the parking brake on. put the shifter in neutral gently turn the steering wheel in the opposite direction of where the wheels are pointed and try turning the key to the off position. Good Luck

I have a 95 camaro, I put the key in ignition and it will not turn the ignition. It's like it's stuck. Replaced the ignition module and still cannot turn ignition. Help!

the ignition module (ignition switch on top of the steering column) normally doesn't get stuck.

things you can try:
steering wheel lock: (the pin gets a "burr" on it and locks everything up) wiggle steering wheel back and forth while trying to turn key.

transmission lock (parking on an incline will jam up the interlock)
push the shifter farther into park while trying to turn the key, or wiggle shifter

Ignition key won t turn

The ignition key won't turn likely because the shifter linkage that locks the key in OFF is worn or loose. Move the shifter linkage hard to the Park position and the key will turn. Have the linkage adjusted and the worn parts replaced

Ignition switch will not engage/turn to start car

Hi Beth usually when shifter is stuck there is a locking mechanism and keeps shifter from engaging unless brake is depressed to release the lock. If you hear a clicking sound when pedal is depressed then switch is probably ok and its probably the steering wheel lock. First try with your spare key to start the vehicle(old key may be worn ). If that doesn't do it then try with WD 40 a very little in ignition key hole or on the key work it slowly and see what happens. If none of these suggestions work its probably the steering wheel lock and that requires surgery. Keep me post best of luck

Cannot turn key in ignition to start car

Hi nicoleelgert, i suspect the steering lock is giving you the problem, all you need to do is turn the steering wheel left and right ( jiggle ) while turning the key in the ignition, it won't move much because it's locked but it will be enough to release the steering lock and allow you to turn key.. make sure you have the shifter in Park position too. Good luck . OK

The ignition key will not come out.

If its not turned all the way to the off position try moving the key around while you turn the wheel back and forth, there is a lock mechanism in the steering wheel to prevent stealing the car without the key. Also make sure the shifter is in park, if the steering wheel doesnt work put some pressure on the shifter towards park and move the key around.
