Question about Hyundai Elantra

1 Answer

When I fuel up my 2004 elantra the gas pump shuts off so I have to fill it up very slowly. My engine light is also on but Im not sure this has anything to do with that. When I called Hyundai about the light they told me I would need my 60,000 mile tune up and to have my timing belt replaced and this would cost around 2600.00. Any ideas? thanks

Hello! sorry to be the bearer of financial responsibilties at this time of year but unles you know a qualified competant Technician I would enlist to your dealer.
If the timing belt breaks the cost's for the repair will possibly treble and serious internal engine damage can occur.
Your fuel problem sounds like a blocked/restricted Vent off on your fuel tank? when you take the cap off is there a slight Whoosh of air? if so then quiz Hyundai you never know it may be a warranty recall and you could get that side of the repair free?
Good Luck!

My work truck does this as well. Pulling out the nozzle doesnt work either. I know it sounds wierd, but try turning the nozzle sideways or upside down when filling the tank. Works well with my work truck.....

P0172 fault code

It could be an emmissions problem. Sometimes even the gas cap being loose can cause a code. Make sure to tighten the cap when done refuelling...you should hear repetitive clicks when its tight. Other components related to code p0172 are o2 sensor(bank 1) and catalytic converters. Hope this helps!

Hyundai not start after overheat

Sounds not good. Question how long was car driven before it overheated. Next thing check your oil if there is a white milky kind of sludge in oil then you may blowen a headgaskit if thats the case you may need a new engine.

Don't let the car run out of gas. Fill the tank and run until the tank is half empty. Again fill the tank.
By driving until you run out of gas, you are letting sediments/dirt collected in the bottom of the tank to enter the engine. Rather they will block the fuel filter. Then gas will not reach the engine.
Clean the gas filter and your car will run fine.
The same advice again. Don't drive until the tank becomes empty.

my 2004 dodge ram 1500 2x2with a hemi 5.7 will not accept fuel.As soon as i start to fill it backs up the filler and stops the pump.the only way i can fill the tank is to hold the fuel nozzel out of the hole ans slowly shoot the fuel into the filler tube. This is not only unsafe for my wife and kids but very time consuming.replaced fuel fill tube already and had breather tube blownout and scoped by a mechanic. He now tells me i need a new $500 gas tank.Is this something i can have the dealership fix for free?

Can't fill the tank

There is a breather tube fitted to the tank which allows air to escape when you fill it with fuel.

That is either blocked or compressed.

When you take the filler cap off is there a gust of air in or out of the tank

Car turn off on the high way

Depending on where you live, elantras did have fuel pump issues, specifically vapor locking, high temp and/or high altitude states were affected the worse. Knowing that there is a common problem with the pumps, I would most likely go with that, I haven't had to replace the coil pack on very many of the elantras. However, make sure you scan the comp for trouble codes, if a p1166 is present, or it says continous adaption, definatly the pump.
