Well did you use 10w - 30 if so then switch to the 5w-30 the reason the car needs a lighter oil in the cold weather. i usually use 10w during the summer helps keep the engine a little cooler on longer runs but during the winter u need the lighter oil so it don't have to work so hard to keep going.

SOURCE: WHERE DO I REFILL GEAR OIL FOR 1992 FESTIVA

Hello, I assume you mean the transmission gear oil. I have the original shop manual for the 1992 Festiva so I can answer any questions that it covers if you like. The gear oil is replaced through the speedometer cable insert, where it enters the top of the transmission. When you remove the speedometer cable, you will see two lines on the insert that screws into the hole and you fill the transmission up to the level of the top line when warm.

How do I fix a loose shifter

If the shifter is very sloppy, making it hard to find the gears, bushings in the shift rod have gone bad. Buy shift rod bushings from NAPA, like $1.50 each, you need 4. Get under the car, and see the bolts holding the rod in place, one under the shifter, one near the transmission. Remove those bolts, install the bushings, 2 on each bolt, put it back together, and you should be good to go.

Loose 5spd shifter

I would be checking the pivot pin that the lever pivots on in the tower on top of the box . This pin is screwed in and lock nutted and they have a habit of coming loose . The lever is tensioned by a spring around the pivot ball and there is normally a plastic bush on the end of the lever that slides in the selector rail slot . But I think that you will find the fault in the pin in the turret housing.

Sounds like lower control arm is lose. Either ball joint or tierod end are bad or not tight. Check nut for tightness. If tight jack front of car up and shake tire up down left right. That will show you whats lose

First gear feels like 3rd gear, second gear is not going in, its a manual transmition

Check yoyur gear linkages and joints for wear and missing bushes, bent brackets or worn pivots. If there is no wear or play on any of these external parts you could have bent or worn gear selectors in the gearbox itself.

Shifter is very loose, sloppy.

The shifter linkage has a two piece plastic / nylon bushing at either end of the gear shift tube that goes from the gear shift lever to the transmission. As the bushes wear through normal usage the gear shift becomes sloppy. The bushes at the gear shift lever end usually wear out first.
You may have to drop the exhaust pipe to access the underside of the gear lever as there is not a lot of space to work in above the exhaust.
To replace, remove the securing nut and through bolt where the underside of the gear lever U section attaches to the tube. Pull down the tube and the worn bits of the bush will come out. Place the new bushes in either side of the tube and put tube end back between the U section. Replace the through bolt and nut. If still a little sloppy, you may have to do the transmission end bushes as well.

I have a 5spd manual gearbox (from the Diesel Gemini) and the gear shifter (after being reinstalled) is completely loose, you can get it in to gear (barely) but it's difficult and tricky, the shifter can...

white plastic bush should be on bottom of selector this breaks off or falls off of end ball causing very sloppy gear lever. remove shifter and look for bush on end of selector also look to see if it fell off inside

Bushes missing from gear stick and transfer stick

If it's a later model (post 98), then I have an idea what's happened. On the rounded ball end of the gear stick that goes in the box, there is meant to be a plastic bush that is only a very loose fit on the end of the stick. If it has dropped while either removing or replacing the gearstick, and fallen into the area at the back of where the gearstick actuates the shift rail, then apart from having a very sloppy gearstick, you won't be able to move the shift rail backwards - which is what happens when you move the gearstick forward (1st,3rd,5th). This should be fixable from in the cab. Of course, if you have an earlier model, none of the above applies, as you have the gearstick moving only one of a choice of three shift rails with no bush in that area. The only thing that happens to those is the spring on the gearstick breaks (that can't be replaced on its own!)
