Had been running very smoothly until 2 weeks ago when it began backfiring and running rough, especially at low speeds, without my having made any adjustments to the engine. I've looked for arcing between wires, but have not seen any. Seems electrical, but I'm confused. Ideas?

If your car has a mas air flow sensor (usualy located right aroung air filter or in air passage after the air filter) check and clean the sensor. This looks like a small spring on the end of 2 wires. BE CAREFUL not to damage the sensor. I have seen where the sensor gets dirty over time and this can cause a rough idle.

Check and see if the EGR valve is leaking, to check this spray water on it at idle, if the water steams off the valve is leaking and is the source of your problem, also are you sure you hooked the new DPFE sensor up right? re-check it..

SOURCE: i have a 1994 gmc safari. It seems to have a smooth idle at times

Im not sure if you got it fixed yet! It could possibly be idle air control valve. But here some more suggestions! I had a 94 Safari van 4.3 liter I was working on for about three days and I finally figured out what was wrong with it. It would run fine for a couple minutes and as soon as I hit the gas and let off it would surge, but anyways I ended up changing the distributer, after the fuel pump and filter, mass air flow sensor, egr valve, idle air control valve, map sensor, and ignition module. So that might sove the problem if you were on the same track with it as I was. Hope this helps ya!

New plugs and wires?

Double check to make sure that you've got the routing and firing order right... if you have 2 switched, the car may still idle well but then pop and sputter on harder acceleration.

The next step would be to run some "Complete Fuel System Cleaner"... If that's the problem, you should see results within 20 miles or so.

Sounds like you make have a vacumn leak on one of the rubber vacumn lines that attach to the intake manifold. Check all of these lines and look for cracks, pinholes and lines that have colapsed.

1988 olds runs rough@ backfires

check the firing order for the plug leads as it only needs 2 to be crossed for this problem. Next have a compression test done to check for valve problems.

You have two coils on this engine. Test each wire for spark with the engine running. You'll find at least one wire not sparking. replace the coil that has the wire that's not sparking.

You state you changed plugs and wires - Do distributor cap & rotor? If not you should then set timing. That should cure hesitation (might change fuel filter also and run good fuel system cleaner through it)
Prob 2 - sounds like a u-joint or possible brake pad/rotor issue. Does the squeal only happen in mornings when cold? Sometimes after sitting overnight, rotors get condensation and when backing out they'll squeal/grind. Somethings to look at...

check Oxygen sensor and associated wires. if you have access to a scan tool watch the sensor signal. it should resemble a smooth wave at idle with engine warm, if its anything else you need a new sensor.
