Cylinder not firing

I have a chevy 305 and it is not firing at all on the number 1 cylinder not even at the disperter

There is a pick-up coil located below the distributor shaft that controls that kind of stuff. only bad thing is you have to pull distributor out to replace. better mark distributor, base, and firewall with a mark each to line back up otherwise you will have it bad out of time. one tooth off is like an almost revolution of the cap. also ignition module on base of distributor. good idea to replace that too.

You need to start by turning the crankshaft pulley to TDC (top Dead Centre) There should be an alignment mark on there for reference. Once you have this, then remove the distributor cap and refer to the position of the rotor arm. It is pointing to number 1 plug lead (number 1 cylinder). You can start from that reference and hook up No.1 plug lead. Then, as your rotor arm turns clockwise, it should hit the following cylinders in this sequence: 1,8,4,3,6,5,7,2.


1,3,5,7 refers to the left bank and 2,4,6,8 refers to the right bank.

Firing order on a 305 on the cap. Got the wires all messed up...


This method is good for the firing order on all chevy small block v8 engines from 265 cubic inches to 400 cubic inches. This would include 265, 283, 305, 327, 350, 400 cu. in. chevy small block v8 engines.

Let's cover some safety concerns first. If you try to troubleshoot a mixed up firing order with the engine running, you could be in for a serious shock,.. literally. You can do it, with certain precautions, but you really don't need to check the firing order with the engine running. You definitely don't want to try checking the firing order if you are wearing any kind of pacemaker or sensitive electromechanical prosthesis. The voltage coming out of the ignition coil is in the thousands. Common sense dictates that you wouldn't stick a knife in an electrical outlet, so you wouldn't want to take chances with being shocked by the electrical discharge from your classic chevy's ignition coil either. The firing order, which should be cast into the intake manifold, for the chevy small block V8 is 1-8-4-3-6-5-7-2. The firing order is the numerical sequence in which the spark plugs are fired. The insertion position of each spark plug wire around the circumference of the distributor cap can be found according to a clock face. The insertion sequence determines the firing order. The firing order is followed clockwise around the distributor cap starting from the 6:30 position with the 6:30 position being the number one cylinder spark plug wire.

On classic chevy small block engines that use ignition breaker points instead of electronic ignitions, the number one cylinder is the one immediately clockwise of the small metal sash cover on the distributor cap. The firing order starts here. There is no sash cover on the distributor cap for GM HEI electronic ignitions, and the firing order is the same, but starting at the 5:30 position.
The firing order makes sense if you know how the cylinders are numbered. The number one cylinder is the front most on the drivers side and 2 being the front most on the passenger side. From front to back, the cylinders are odd numbered on the drivers side, and even numbered on the passenger side.

I took of*** my spark plug wires working on my small block 350 pickup and I don't remember the the firing order to put the new wires back on. Is there a diagram anywhere or is it even that difficult to...

Setting the rest of the firing order is just a matter of repetition. Be sure to count the spark plugs from front to back on each side of the motor to identify the correct cylinder number in the firing order.

We've replaced the distributor cap and rotor in our 1985 Chevy C10 305 V8 and still have to fire TO the plugs. It won't start


This is a one piece distributor. It has the coil and pickup sensor all built in. Check and see if you have 12 volts on the large red wire that plugs into the cap while the key is on. (The other wire is for a tachometer if you have one). If you have power and there is no spark from your ignition wires, your pickup module is bad in the distributer. Very rarely have I seen a failed coil.

Just installed 305 in my 79 monte carlo, engine turns but will not fire.


You may have already got this, I forgot to sign in first. The firing order is 1-8-4-3-6-5-7-2, odd numbers on the driver's side and even on the passengerside. Number 1 is closest to the rad, but I need to know the year and what the engine came out of to tell you more, Like how to position the distributor and the advance. Let me know, I'll be around most of the day.

Timming seems to be off--its back firing


Turn the engine by hand till the timing mark on the pulley is aligned with 0 on the timing scale (right side of pulley) If the rotor is pointing at the rear of the engine, turn one more time...it is now pointing at #1.
cylinders are 1,3,5,7 on drivers side, 2,4,6,8 on passenger side (front to back) Order is 18436572.
