Rough idle, surges when cold

2001 Escape 3L. Idle surges and lopes and sometimes dies when cold. Smooths out when engine gets warm unless ambient air temperature is cold. If it's a cold day it never gets to a completely smooth idle.

I took mine over to Pep Boys. They charged me $100 for an engine diagnostic. The problem was a faulty DPFE Sensor and the EGR valve which I replaced and the vehicle has been working Great since then.

Not sure if this is your case but it might give it a try.

By the way, the DPFE sensor can be installed in 5 mins but the EGR valve is a little bit stubborn. Thx

What would cause a rough idle when cold and at idle but runs great once warm

I'd be pulling the spark plugs and checking for condition, gap, fouling, etc.

What are the probable causes of DTCs P0031, P0603, and P1148?

Clean out you idle air bypass valve with carb cleaner. P0031 air/fuel sensor 1 heater (B1)bank 1, p0603 engine control back up circuit,p1148 closed loop B1. Broken heater in upper O2 sensor is one if not all of your problems. Replace all of your O2 sensors & reset engine light.

Dies when I first start have to restart a few times and dies at stop light unless it gets a little gas

This is usually a problem caused by a bad water temperature sensor. There are usually 2 sensors with one working the temperature gauge and the second working engine controls.

The "cold start" sequence is similar to a choke in old cars. It needs the signal from the water sensor to trigger the cold start sequence. The cold start sequence enriches the fuel charge, adjusts timing, and increases idle speed until the engine gets a little warm.

Now if stalling when warm, you have other issues. Manifold runners are a problem on some engines.

Dodge drango 2000 will not idle in cold weather until warmed-up

I would test, or replace my IAT sensor . (Intake air temperature sensor)
If it's defective, it will send wrong signal, thus wrong mixture for cold engine.

It can be issue with IAC( idle air control valve) causing the problem.

There are many other possibilities causing these idle issues.Engine idles rough. There are few help links with solutions to troubleshoot such idle issues.

1989 5.0 fuel injected check engine light is on idles rough when cold smooths out when warm but dies imediatly when throuttle is added

check O2 sensors, idle control regulator, mass airflow sensor and pretty much every sensor in the air/fuel system. go to autozone and have them run a diagnostic test, theyll do it for free if the check engine light is on. trust me they did it for me about 8 hours ago

I HAVE A 2002 TAHOE AND THE MOTOR SURGES WHEN I START IT UP. IT DOES IT BAD WHEN THE AIR IS COLD.

hello thanks for choosing fixya.

one of the most common problems on cold start ups in colder weather is the intake gaskets leaking causing the engine to get extra air this will cause a rough running for a minute or two and once starts to warm up it smooths out. this sounds like what you are experiencing. I would have that checked. might also wanna try to clean the throttle plate this gets debris on it and will reduce the airflow rate and cause low idle and the computer tries to compensate for it and can cause a surge at idle but this is usually all the time.

Cold weather won't idle, engine dies

Please check your idle controller whch is normally located near the air intake.Sometimes cleaning them and putting them back solve this problem.

Sounds like it's going to die until it warms up...

Katrina, the fact that your car runs (like a beauty) when shes warmed up, indicates a fuel air mixture problem when cold. Your car is equipt with electronic fuel injection. This system utilizes a series of sensors that detect conditions such as engine temp, outside temp, humidity and air pressure to determine what mixture is perfect for the prevailing condition. For example, on a cold start, the sensors should know that the engine is not up to the proper operating temperature and provide more fuel and less air, (a richer mixture), until the engine warms, this emulates a choke on a vehicle equipt with a carburator. The problem either lies in the sensor itself, or the brain that interprets these inputs to decide what fuel/air mixture to deliver.
