Question about 1999 Oldsmobile Alero

1 Answer

Key problem I picked up my car from a Recovery towing company. Upon picking up the car I pulled my keys out & was told, we have a key (apparently they made) The problem is my original key may or maynot start the car anymore, if it does start it cuts off. When using the key they made, the car starts right up. I don't understand

Seems like what they did was had the car anti theft system reprogrammed to the new key only. Your car has a transponder anti theft system on it. What this does is your old key has a chip in it that when you put it in the ignition it emits a certain frequency picked up by the car. when the frequency matches the car, the car starts, when it doesnt your car will not start or not stay running very long such as your case. I would get ahold of the dealership and have your keys reprogrammed (unless your ok with using the new one the towing company made). Good luck to you and thanks for using fixya!

Need a key or key code broke the only key

two of the most productive methods i have found are
1) local junkyard such as pick n pull or u pull it (if keys are coded call a local locksmith or even some tow companies can and will recode a key for a cheap reasonable price)
2) advance auto and or autozone and or o'riely auto parts are excelent sources of help and can get you the correct replacement ignition lock cylender

I was given a 1984 Chevrolet pick-up(54,000 miles. needs freeze plug) from my Uncle with a key half broken in the ignition. I don't have the other part of key. I need to remove the key tumbler so

You will need a trip to the your local parts store. You should be able to buy a brand new lock cylinder for about 15-20 dollars. Tools needed will be a socket set, steering wheel puller, phillips screwdriver, and a set of torques bits and driver. If you pull the steering wheel and unscrew the hazard knob and turn signal arm, then unscrew the turn signal switch you will be able to remove the mounting screw that holds the lock cylinder into the coulmn. install new cylinder and now you have a new key for the truck.

I broke my key in the ignition switch. How do I remove it

You can try a high powered magnet, i would try a pick set, get two needle point picks and pinch the key between them and pull out. You can pick up a pick set at your local parts store.

I just had a 2005 bmw 325i picked up by a towing company because the keys were locked in it. They used a slim jim to open the door and get the keys but now the car won't start.

you could try re-setting the key fob/remote by re-programming it, here is how
1,unlock car as normal with the key..not remote 2,get in car and close drivers door make sure all doors closed! 3,switch ignition on then off ( do not turn it over to run) 4.remove key 5,press and hold UNLOCK button ( do not let it go) 6,press LOCK button 3 times within 10 seconds (all 3 presses) 7,release UNLOCK button you should then ( dependent on model type) either see LED flash slowly for 10 seconds, or the central locking system locks and unlocks rapidly a few times to indicate a successful reprogram of the key, hope this helps

We tow a 2004 Jeep Liberty Renegade behind our motorhome. Twice now, the front wheels have locked on us while towing. Transfer case was in N, transmission in P, key in the On position, all as described in...

I don't have towing specs on yours, but I have never seen a requirement that the key be "on" unless there is a position where the wheels are free but the electrical system is not on. The steering needs to be able to turn, but having the electrical system on, it's possible that the abs system is somehow locking up the wheels (reading wheel speed and comparing it to no driveshaft speed) To verify my theory, if it's impossible to not have the key all the way on, I'd try pulling the abs relay or fuse and see if it still happens. Also, on long tows with the electrical system on you may need to re-charge the battery (another reason I can't understand why they would tell you to have the key on)
Good luck with this...perhaps an rv guy will pick up on your post and give you a better answer.

I lost my ignition key

A locksmith can come and pull your ignition switch and make a key for it, if you have AAA
I think they pick up part of the cost.
