My window rolled down on it's own today and when I tried to roll it back up -I could hear the motor and some cracking noise. I cannot get to the window to pull it back up--I think the motor is fine and it is off track but is it easy to get into this door without breaking anything

Sounds like a power window motor. Sometimes this will help diagnose your problem for the mechanically uninclined. While holding the switch to power the window while the window is stuck, just bank on the inside of the door panel for that window without causing damage. Sometimes this will jar the motor and it will start to move. This is a sign of a bad power window motor. It may also be a switch as the alternative problem but most likely the power window motor. I recommend replacing the window motor and window regulator at the same time. You can usually buy both together.
if there is a pause from when the motor starts to when the window moves it is a worn or faulty window regulator, the motor not starting when you press the up on the switch could be a bad switch, if you have a meter check for voltage at the switch when you press up.
Seems like you need window motors. When you flip the switch to roll them down, the window basically "falls" down slowly, but when rolling them back up, the motors aren't strong enough anymore to slide the heavy window back into place. Unfortunately that is usually the only solution when it comes to power windows. Your switch could be bad, but if you tried all switches in the car it is definitely your motors.
when you push the switch if you hear a grinding noise you will need a new window regulator if you hear nothing the motor is stuck and by pushing on the switch while banging on the center of the door panel with fist or rubber hammer will sometimes unstick the motor
