If you have a transmission fluid level dipstick it is an auto.......but you would know that. Don't be confused with the engine oil level dipstick.

The correct fluid level when the engine is hot is between the 2 notches marked 'HOT' on the dipstick. If there are no markings 'HOT' and 'COLD' then the level should be on the upper notch when hot.

To check trans fluid level the engine should be running (yep, running), and in Park with the handbrake on. First though, with the engine running and with the footbrake pressed, shift slowly from Park right down to Low and then back. Then check level.

It does sound as though the fluid level is low. If it has been some months since the trans fluid was changed, I'd have that done instead of merely topping it up.

I forgot to add, if the fluid level is all OK, then it may be your No1/2 shift solenoid has failed in the trans. When this happens the car cannot find low gear, and it mimics a slipping tranny.

I assume you are referring to manual transmission. Taking the aged of your vehicle into consideration your clutch plate assembly need to be replaced (Clutch and pressure plate and thrust bearing) The first symptom of a clutch system worn to it limits is the slipping experienced. Any vehicle's clutch will wear down over time and will need to be replaced after a while. As a interim the clutch can be adjusted at the hydraulic servo that activates the clutch lever entering the gear box. Open the hood and look down to your right at the gearbox. Let somebody step on the clutch pedal and look for the movement where the servo activates the clutch lever going inside the gearbox. It is possible to adjust the pin that moves in and out of the servo - adjust to shorter length (Only a fraction of a inch). Get in to the car start it up and engage 1 st gear. Let the clutch out slowly. It should start to "take" within a inch from the lowest pedal position. If not shorten the pin a bit more. "Shortening" of the pin must be stop when a gap becomes visible between the servo pin and the lever going into the gearbox - no driving of the vehicle should then be undertaken as it will let you down at the next intersection.

SOURCE: 1991 Toyota pickup 4WD clutch slipping

There is an adjustment for the clutch pedal under the dash where the push rod goes thru the firewall. There is only aprx. 1/2" of adjustment so be careful when making an adjustment, if your clutch is slipping then you need to shorten the throw of the push rod.

Transmission not shiftin

For car not changing gears it can be shifter assembly issue, or it can also be transmission issue. Get the shifter assembly inspected with ignition OFF.

For more troubleshooting, I suggest you to get the Following help link checked, its complete step by step procedure to inspect gear shift issues: -----

Transmission slip mainly at highway speeds

This does not sound good. It is possibly your O/D direct clutch or O/D brake slipping in the transmission. Seek a couple of specialist opinions.

Trans slips when the trans warms up

Sounds like you have definitely an internal problem in the transmission if its slipping ...

It could have an electrical issue as well like a faulty PCM .

How could the mechanic say its fine if it slips.....
I would start by going to a different shop/mechanic and have them scan the data to see whats going on electrically..but i would think at this mileage and with it slipping you're probably going to be looking at an overhaul/replacement transmission.

My 1995 Jeep Grand Cherokee transmission slips in overdrive

sounds like a possible shift solenoid. If it's due for a fluid change, do that and add a container of lucas trans conditioner. Likely you have a drain plug on the pan so if the fluid was recently serviced, just drain a quart out and replace with the additive, then top off.
If the condition does not change within a week, likely you will need better diagnosis from a reputable trans shop.

You might want to send the transmission to flush and replace the ATF (Atomatic Transmission Fluid) and run it for a while. If it keeps the same behavior, consider replacing the clutches, as it is now a gear slipping fault, and sooner or later, you'll end up rideless. Hope this will help you.
