Question about 1988 Jeep Wrangler

1 Answer

1998 Jeep Wrangler. Ran perfect until I went over a speed bump a little fast. Now it will not idle AT ALL and runs rough. I looked under the hood and did not see anything disconnected. Any ideas?

Will the trouble code reader show any fault codes even if the engine light is not on?

  • samorrow Dec 10, 2008

I don't think a 1988 has an ODB Reader. It was standard for 1986 and later.

    I meant 1996 and later.

I checked the vacuum hoses and do not see any disconnected. Also, now, sometimes it idles fine and sometimes it does not and sounds like it misses. Hit or miss depending on the day. Any ideas what to check for?

Was fine one day, then it started idling rough, and now will stall/cut out.

Sounds like you knocked a vacuum hose off somewhere. Check that first before spending lots of $.

If you run both the tests I am sure it will, one test is the engine running test the other is the engine off key on test, only the dealer can do the engine running test unless u want to spend $500-1000 on a hand held full function scan tool, the run test is most likely the one that will shoe the problem.

1st thing to do is run a trouble code test and look for damaged wiring, I have found that when the term little to fast is used it usually means real fast.

Check your struts, if you mess up one of those it will ride very bad.

Motor runs a little rough, idle goes up and down

From my experience with my wife's 97 Wrangler look at the intake manifold for 2 vacuum lines. They will be just under the throttlebody One of them is broken or has come loose. We had this problem several times, idle high, running eratic, until I put a smaller rubber hose on the fitting. Has run good since.

What should the idle speed be set at on a 1989 jeep wrangler 4.2 liter straight 6 cyl. It has a 2bbl carb. It idles at 1000 rpm right now but seems fast or is that about right?

Most carb. engines should idle between 725 and 750 R.P.M., lower the idle and be sure to check the timing. You should have an emissions label under the hood to explain the idle and timing.

I was running it for the 1st time after this winter it was idling fine at high idle 1,200 rpm and i bumped the throttle and it ran really rough and will barely run at all, I just don't know what went...

sounds like it might have varnished gas in the system. I would change the fuel filter, clean out the lines with a good carb/fuel injector cleaner and fill the tank with fresh gas. I will run a little rough until the bad gas is run out. If this dont correct the problem then it might be in the fuel pump or fuel regulator areas.

1999 jeep wrangler idles rough almost dies out now has a slight miss or hesitation while driving

Please be fast about checking your fuel pump. It is not giving enough fuel pressure.

Cheers.

988 Wrangler will not idle and runs rough

check vacuum lines would be the first thing i would look at. try taking some carb cleaner and spraying the lines and if you get a change in idle you have a leak
