I am never too keen on disconnecting the computer as sometimes it can be more of a headache than it was to have the light on.

Keep in mind that not all vehicles will have the following issues.

For example: when resetting the computer myself on my 1997 F-150, my truck "forgot" how to run. I have done this twice now, so, I know with my particular truck it is not a fluke. My truck would turn off on me every time I took my foot off of the gas pedal. I almost wrecked one time when it did this to me in the middle of a turn (I learned quickly how much power steering helps!).

On some vehicles, if the radio has a "security" feature, you may have to re-enter the security code particular to that radio. So, if you don't have that code, you would have a useless radio.

Again, this is not even with the majority of the vehicles on the road, but, these are reasons why I just simply do my best not to reset the computer by pulling the fuse or disconnecting the battery: I'd just rather not find out!!!

So, how to reset the light? Supposedly, here in GA, it is illegal for AutoZone and stores of the like to turn the light off for you (unless you "know" the right people). Since you may not be like me (knowing plenty of people in the automotive industry who will turn the light off for me), you may want to purchase a scanner for yourself. They average $100, however, they work with a great variety of vehicles, you are not at the mercy of an auto mechanic trying to squeeze every last dime out of you by charging $50 just to hook your car up to the computer scanner, AND you can turn the check engine light off yourself.

Disclaimer: Know the problem you are dealing with and fix the probelm BEFORE turning off the light. Turning off sensor lights DOES NOT fix problems!

I have a 2002 VW Jetta and the temperature gauge keeps going up and down... Is this something to worry about ?

Replace the Engine Coolant Temperature (ECT) sensor. ECT sensor is placed in the right back side of the cylinder head on 2002 VW Jetta 1.9 TDI. See picture below:

Engine light on code p1296 was found the car is a 2001 jetta 80000 miles runs good all censor replace in the last five months it warms up fast idle good. pass smog. what can the problem be. thank you...

VW DTC 17704 (P1296) - Cooling system malfunction.

Coolant Temperature Sensor (CTS) is faulty and reading an incorrect temp'.

Replace with the new version of the sensor, clear the code.

If indicated coolant temp' is too low the thermostat is sticking open.

I have a jetta 2002. One of the lights is this funny looking square on the right. It`s yellow. What does this mean?

this is the engine electonics lamp or eml, basically covers upto 2000 different codes, if it hasnt gone out its a permanent fault but if the car is driving ok not too serious if its major (petrol models) the lamp will flash. Refer to a good garage/ vw agent or specialized in diagnostics to fix.

2006 vw jetta tdi service engine light reset

With the key in the ignition (but not turned), press and hold the Odometer Reset Button on the right hand side of the panel. While still holding that button, turn the key (although not far enough to start the engine) and then press and hold the Minute button on the left side of the instrument pane(if pressing doesnt work try turning the knob clockwise until service light has gone off and skip the pressing)l. Release both buttons at the same time.

Code po234 overboost condition 2002 jetta tdi

Don't know much about VW but if it's fine, and it doesn't happen again I wouldn't worry about it. If it does try resetting the ECU by removing the battery terminals and touching the positive lead(red wire) to the negative battery post. It might spark a little, this is just the capacitors discharging, resetting your ECU and starting over. It's like restarting your personal computer
