Knocking in Engine in 2001 Subaru Forester

We purchased a 2001 Subaru Forester with 110,000 kms.  It has a knocking, rattling noise that comes from the engine area when going at higher rpms.  The noise seems to go away when you take your foot completely off the accelerator but stays on when you ease your foot off the accelerator.  It is a rattling/knocking noise that is quite fast.  It is fine driving in the city where you are not go ing at higher speeds.  We just got it, not sure of Subaru quirks.  Help us out with finding this problem.  Thank you.

I have a 1999 Legacy B4 twin turbo with the same problem, have been told that it could be timing belt tensioner bearing.

Knocking noise near front of engine

On a very cold start (eg winter) older Subs often make knocking noise from the LHS of the engine. This is actually quite normal and is a "feature" of the oil paths in the engine. It goes away once the engine is warm.

Might also be the cam belt hydraulic sensor working loose. The tensioner pivot bolt can be done too light or fitted clumsily, and it strips the thread. If it gets too loose, the belt can jump teeth and bend valves.

I have a 2001 Subaru Forester. When the car is cold (not the engine); so in the winter months when I start the car there is a loud rattling/knocking in the engine area. Once the car heats up, it goes away....

Ever had your wedding band on during the winter outside and it wants to fall off ,same thing for cars metal expands and could cause some unwanted noise from heat shields and such thing is to find it and eliminate this sound 1 morning you must find this sound and where it is so you do not confuse that sound with an actual rattle inside the block so please find and fix this problem you will thank me later.

2005 Forester X Engine Knock...big end bearing??? That much???

The lower end of your motor that has the knocking noise will sound like a deep penatrating thud. That will be the rear bearing for the crack shaft. You can find a cheaper place to have it repaired. $3,500 sounds more right to repair at most places

2001 subaru forester 225000 kms..how long do they typically last?

Provided the vehicle has been serviced regulary and had good quality oil and filters, theres no reason the car shouldn't get 400,000+ kms. Check its service history, and its oil consumption.

Knocking noise at idle and accelearation

did you buy it privately or a dealer w/ a warrantee? If you have a warantee, use it.If not start by changing the oil& see if that gives you any results.use the proper oil for Subaru, not a Quick Lube.

Engine make Knocking noise when cold

I have the same problem on my 2.0L 2001 Legacy auto. It began about 1000 miles ago. It has now done 84k. From my online searches this is most probably 'piston slap', and is not serious. To save weight Subaru shaved down the skirts on the pistons. With normal engine wear the pistons will at some point rattle against the cylinders until the engine is heated up and the pistons expand. The rattling should go away after a few minutes. If it persists say 10-15 minutes, it may be another problem.

Rattling sound when accelerating on 2007 Forester

On mine, I got under there and there are rocks rattling in the heat shield. There are factory made holes in it, and the rocks sit in there like eggs in a carton and rattle when the engine hits a certain vibration frequency which is basically when it is at a stop light or idling. The repair shop wanted to charge to cut them off but I think I am going to drill bigger holes so the rocks fall out, as they are pretty tiny.
