Geraldine,I would venture that the resistor board,usually mounted near the blower motor,has almost gone all the way bad. Have someone check it. Of course,it could be the blower speed selector switch,but probably not. don-ohio (:^)
CHECK SEE IF HEATER BLOWER MOTOR WORKING, REMOVE HEATER BLOWER MOTOR HOT WIRE HEATER BLOWER MOTOR SEE IF BLOWER MOTOR WORKING BLOWER MOTOR FAULTY OR YOU HAVE FAULTY WIRING AT BLOWER MOTOR AND RESISTOR.
You don't list the vehicle your asking about but in general when the blower motor only works on the high speed the blower resistors have blown. The resistors are what control the fan speed, when they go bad only high will work. The resistors blowing is usually a side effect of a blower motor going bad, pulling too much current. When replacing the resistors it's advisable to replace the blower motor as well so as not to have a repeat problem.
Blower motor resistor is most common ($20-$70) it controls the blower motor fan and speeds or fan relay fuse (usually under the hood) If it's not either then the blower itself is bad. You can pull the motor and apply 12volts to it to test, if it spins then the resistor.
Start at the relay for the heater/ac making sure it is working. Remove relay and clean it off then replace making sure there is current through to the other side.Use a test light. from there you can go to the blower motor wiring.Under your dashboard. Look for the resistor which is a switch type gadget in between the battery current and the blower. Check to see if there is current passing through to the wiring before getting to the resistor.Replace if nessesary.
Sounds exactly like what my mom's car was doing as for the blower only working on high. It was the resistor... I assumed it was the climate controls and replaced them but it didn't change anything then i thought that i must be the blower motor and replaced that too but it turned out to be the resistor which is under the dash on the passenger side of the car.
