How to change an o-ring above oil filter and above oil cooler.

I have a 91 passat, 2.0 16valve engine , weather got to
-25C and i think the oil filter was full of frozen oil. the car started great and i went in the house to let it warm up. i saw from the house window that the car was rapidly leaking oil.- it was coming from an o -ring above the filter, the filter screws into a square housing( oil cooler?),which is connected to a circular housing and rubber o-ring(the leak) with a sensor wire sticking out the top. i cant find a repair manual or even a diagram to figure out how to get the new o-ring in there. does anyone know how to get this part off? or a spot i can view a diagram of this part ? any help would be appreciated.

    I had exactly the same problem which is why I'm here. It is a nasty job to get this thing off as the cooling hoses are welded on with no room to work. There is a nut on the oil filter stem that holds the cooler on but coolent lines must be removed to get it off. This nut was loose on my car which is probably what started this problem.Some one please post a diagram.

Remove the hoses from the top side of the engine first its a lot easier, then replace the seals on the cooler, its not a nice job even on a ramp

Oil leaks from the place oil fiter fit on motor


Perhaps but it could also be a bad oil filter seal. Might want to remove the filter to inspect both the seal and the housing.

There is an O ring that is bad it goes in between the oil cooler adapter and the engine block.

If no external leak and the transmission fluid colour looks white, the problem belongs to the automatic gearbox oil cooler. The oil cooler has broke mixing the gearbox oil and coolant causing this milkshake. It's a small radiator core type oil / water heat exchanger. It is cracked inside and transmission oil is mixed with engine coolant. Because the transmission oil pressure is greater than engine coolant pressure, the transmission fluid level drops. See also the coolant colour inside recovery coolant reservoir inder bonnet! It could be like this:

Where is the oil filter on Passat TDI? Is it a square aluminium block on the left side of the engine?


The square aluminium block on the left side of the engine is the oil cooler (water/oil heat exchanger). The oil filter is placed inside the aluminium cylinder block above the square aluminium block. It has a black plastic round cover with 14 edges. See picture below:

Win i start the car and look under the hood, there is oil coming out of a box that is, on the side of the block. But above the oil filter ?? . How do i fix that, is it a gasket or what ??


That is the engine oil cooler. There is a 'O' ring between it and the oil filter mount. They harden and crack.

Ask your dealer for the large Oil Cooler 'O' Ring.

Remove oil filter. Remove exposed pipe nut holding oil cooler to housing. If nessacary, drain coolant so you can disconnect coolant hoses from cooler or catch coolant as hoses disconnected. Swing oil cooler away and remove old 'O' ring.

Place new 'O' ring with grease on oil cooler it to hold it in place and reassemble. Tighten oil filter pipe nut to around 18 ft lbs .

Refit oil filter. Refit coolant hoses and top of oil and coolant.
Run engine to check for leaks and allow to cool. Top of coolant to COLD level if required.

You will need hose clamp pliers and wrench for oil cooler pipe nut. Pliers can be obtained from most parts stores.

Oil leak near oil filter, just above the oil filter


Probably the oil cooler seal. This large o-ring is located between the oil cooler and the block adapter. After removing the oil filter, you will see a single nut on the threaded portion of the pipe that the filter screws onto. Removing this nut will allow you to remove the oil cooler. You may want to disconnect the coolant lines from the oil cooler (makes the job a little easier), but be sure to plug the lines as you remove them so you don't loose coolant. The o-ring will be on the top side of the oil cooler. A new o-ring will cost you $3 to $9, depending on where you get it. For a VW repair . . . this one is cheap and pretty easy to do. The parts diagram below may help. The seal is part #19.

Oil leak above oil filter . Ther is a adapter. on a 1995 chvey 5.7 motor


There is a rubber o-ring between the oil filter adaptor and the engine block that needs replacement.
Disconnect the two oil cooler lines from the adaptor. remove oil filter. Two torx head bolts mount the adaptor to the block. rmove these and replace o-ring. Assemble in the reverse order of removal.

Have your cam seals checked. Cam seals are a big problem on these cars and a major source of oil leaks. Another source is the oil cooler gasket but that doesn't appear to be the issue here as your leaks are well above the oil cooler. Good Luck.

take the oil filter off,the fitting that the oil filter screws on take that out your housing will then come off the oil cooler so you can replace the o ring

Honda accord 1992 I have a oil leak around the oil filter is it


is it an ex?
is it a bad leak?
it could be 2 things
1) oil pressure sending unit above the filter
2) "o" ring between the oil cooler and block on ex models only. the oil cooler is between the filter and block with 2 coolant hoses attached to it. also might be the oil filter. i replace alot of sending units and oil cooler o rings.
