I tested the battery with a amp meter to see if it was showing 12 volts. I don't know where the soleniod is. I'm no mechanic even tho I get sucked in to fixing cars sometimes. 27 years doing body work and now everyone thinks I'm a mechanic. LOL If I find and check the solenoid and it's ok, what else do you think it could be?

Ok..I have the basic skills but only basic. I know very little about car wiring. I can replace parts. I really don't know how to troubleshoot this kind of problem other than trial and error..That's why I was hoping someone here could give a direction to look in..

Thank you for your time. I appreciate it..

I got someone to hold the ignition on while I tapped on the starter. The car started. The starter will be replaced tomorrow..

How did you test the battery, u have a load tester? Have u point a test light on the starter solenoid terminal to see if the solenoid is getting 12 volts when the key is held in the crank position?

My friend you need to have a person with basic car skills take a look at this, an amp meter reads amps not volts, 11-12 volts is a pretty flat battery.

It may not be the starter it might be just the wiring if so it could save you a few dollars.

1996 Buick Regal turned off put gas in would not start makes no sound when you turn the key no click nothing tried all the tricks any idea whats wrong

make sure car is in park or neutral, if still nothing, make sure battery terminals are clean, just because the dash lights work does not mean there is good enough connection at the battery to start the car. Make sure battery is fully charged. If still nothing, sometimes giving the starter a tap with a hammer will get it going again. Good luck.

1998 Accord will not start

starting withthe battery, check and clean ALL connections as something is not making proper contact.make sure the cables are good, clamps your way to the starter solenoid and check contacts/ connections there..also chech ground wires..all this is only if the battery does not have a shorted cell in it.. even new ones can get shorts..if you can get it to start go to autozone or advance..they do free testing..

We have to assume the battery is usable, if not, anything else doesn't help. A couple of possibilities- First, get a simple, cheap device that uses a 9V battery and the car's cigarette lighter to prevent losing anti-theft codes. Once this is plugged in, remove the negative battery cable first, then the positive. CLEAN the battery connectors and terminals. Try to start the engine. If it still does the same thing, remove the negative battery cable again and follow it to its next connection and clean that point. While it is off, remove the other end of the positive cable which goes to the starter terminal and clean both points.
While under the hood, look for the cable connecting the engine block to the body of the car and clean both ends of that cable.
If the problem is still there, it can be related to one of these; the ignition switch, the starter solenoid or a corroded fuse connection. The starter is not protected by a fuse but the solenoid may be.
Good luck-

Check the battery terminals first to make sure they are tightened and not corroded, if you have a way to check the battery that would be good [ you may have a voltage gauge on the dash, when you first turn on the key it should register at least 12 volts, and not drop below 9 volts when cranking ], a load tester is the best way. If all these things are ok, then I would suspect the igntion switch is faulty as it seems you have no power to anything at times.

Could be bad battery or Somthing going on with the main fuse box.  Another thing to check is your ground wires.  If they are loose, you can not complete the circut.

98 accord wont start. lights flicker in dash and engine wont turn over

Have the battery checked.  You may have heard a fast clicking sound when the lights were flickering, if so it's coming from the starter solenoid.  If the battery is bad, have the voltage regulator and alternator checked also.  A bad voltage regulator or alternator will kill the new battery.

Try starting with jumper cables, if that works, you can pull the battery out, take it to a auto parts store that will test it for free (most parts stores will do this).  If it's bad, you can put a new battery in and then drive straight to somewhere to have the charging system tested.
