Question about 2000 Pontiac Montana

1 Answer

Engine misfire I have a 2000 Pontiac Montana that started to miss, my code reader said misfire #1 cylinder. I had it looked at and was told that the head gaskets needed to be replaced. After replacing the head gaskets along with new plugs & wires it now has a misfire on #5 cylinder. I swaped coils, injectors, plugs and wires and the problem remains. Could it be the ignition box or even the computer, or what? This vehicle also has another problem with the lights strobeing, I thought this was the alternator and unrelated to the other but maybe not.

You are have misfires I have had this problem and it was only one cylinder that was misfiring and that was in cylinder 1 and if its more than one it will cost you more it only cost me less than $50 dollars at the dealership (I was told that it was the age of the car bad wire) and it also depends on how many cylinders you have from 1 to 8... I have 6. Talk to you La Da!!

Cylinder 1 misfire

Misfire codes (including P0301 (THIS WOULD BE YOUR CODE), P0302, P0303, P0304, P0305, P0306, P0307 & P0308) indicate that there is a misfire in a cylinder, the last number indicates which cylinder has the problem. If something is causing a miss in random cylinders or is affecting all of them, a P0300 misfire code will be stored in the car's computer. It's always smart to begin with the basics. Also consider the mileage and service history when diagnosing a misfire. Higher mile vehicles are more inclined to have mechanical issues with the engines, like low compression from worn valves or rings etc. Any accompanying codes should also be considered in case they may be related. If the spark plugs are worn (excessive gap) or the car is past due for a tune up, it may be smart to go ahead and start with spark plugs and spark plug wires and go from there.
The most common misfire causes on the cars I've worked on have been:
  1. Spark plugs
  2. Spark plug wires
  3. Ignition coil
  4. Fuel injector
  5. Wiring to fuel injector
  6. Timing Belt (IF EQUIPPED)
  7. Vacuum leak or stuck open EGR
  8. Contaminated fuel or bad fuel pump
  9. Weak compression
  10. Blown head gasket

Obviously there are many different types of cars, so a service manual for the specific one that you are working on may be required to help pinpoint the misfire you're looking for, but hopefully this will direct you to some of the most common causes of misfires in cars of today.
When diagnosing a SES light, it's best to start with a quick scan with a code reader. If checking the engine's mechanical integrity specialty tools, like a compression tester, an exhaust back pressure gage or cylinder leak down tester may be needed.

2001 Pontiac Montana - what is a misfire #5?

Without your actual trouble code, I am assuming that you are have a misfire on cylinder # 5. The computer cannot really tell what is causing the misfire only that cyl 5 is not putting out full power. If it misfires when cold then smooths out as it warms up, I would say it is probably an injector that is sticky, as it warms up it starts working properly.

What you do, is get to a shop,NOT THE DEALER, that has a professional scanner and oscilloscope. Not a code reader. Now you know that codes alone DO NOT tell you what's wrong and never what to replace. I have a 2004. This is Fords most complex vehicle ever. Sort of a test bed for them and a nightmare for us. You will need to find the best driveability tech you can find to work on it. It won't be cheap, nor a quick fix

the code reader should tell you what cylinder it is if so switch the injectors around to see if the misfire moves to a different cylinder if it does you have a bad injector
