1977 f100 Ignition problem---slight noise, no starting

I have a 1977 f100 that gets started about once a week, and the last time i went out to get it running i tried starting and all i got was a loud humming noise, the engine didnt turn over. I went to check the battery cables and i believe it was the + terminal that was extremely hot. The lights and everything worked though when the battery was hooked up. And i went to Autozone to get the battery charged and checked and it was fine. I tried hooking it up again and i saw slight smoke coming from either the + terminal or one of thw wire, needless to say i havent tried it again. What would be causing this?

cam or crank sensor or the ground wire from the battery to the body. Cam and crank sensor will cause the no start but the clicking sounds
leads me to believe the little wire running from your battery ground is
most likely the cause. if all else the altenator is no longer working and that can go any time

Abby, I'd look to the place that replaced that expensive bearing assembly. That's the first thing I'd do. The other possibilities could be serious problems, especially if it's 4x4. We don't even want to go there. That possibility would be a shreaded front differential or axles.

At the transmission. About half round, usually 2 of 3/8" or 7/16" short bolts holding it on if I remember correctly. You'll see wire harness going into it.
