Truck ran out of gas, truck key left on--ran battery down, now there is no power to the fuel pump
SOURCE: 1987 FORD RANGER W/2.9 ENGINE
I know this is going to sound crazy, but my son's truck was having the same thing's going on... fixed alot of the same things... still nothing. sometimes i could pump the **** out of it, and keep cranking, and it would fire for a moment and then die. Some times it would start and run til it got warmed up, and then either run like ****, or just die went down to Schucks and had them test the alternator, and they said it was good... tried a few other things, and then gave up, and it sat for several months. Was talking to a different guy at Schucks again one day and he said that he thought that he remembered there being some kiind of a problem with the alternators in the same year frame... so I went back to the house, pulled the alternator out (truck wasn't running) and had them test it again... sure as **** it was weak... bought new one threw it in, and the trucks been running every since... reason for long story? I was told everything else under the sun to replace, but this was what was wrong.

if engine won't crack - dead battery
if engine cranks but won't start - no fuel or spark
fuel reservoir is the fuel tank.
a fuel filter can be inside a housing...

This is not going to be fun.... With dry lines it's always a pain to start a diesel. I have a couple of things to try. First attempt..... open the drain on the fuel filter, do a key on ignition off 3 times for about 30 seconds each time. Then close the filter drain and try starting it. It might run a bit rough for a few miles but it should work itself out as you drive it. If this doesn't work we'll need to try something else.
Attempt two...... Find the pump reservoir. It should be located in a fairly easy to find place. I think it's either just on top of the filter, or just after the pump. There should be a small allen head screw on top of that. Check the level with a clean piece of wire. It should be within a half inch of the top. You can fill that with diesel through there also. If that's dry, fill it. It's going to take a micro funnel to get it filled. If you roll a sheet of paper up to make a funnel that should work in a pinch. Just make sure the cone that you make has a really tiny opening that just fits in the hole. If this doesn't fix it you'll probably have do open the fuel rails up... With excessive cranking you may have pumped a lot of air into the rails the plugs are located on the fuel rail.
There's a fuel rail plug, 1/8 npt, on the right front(passenger side) and left rear head on the slant of the head.
Give these a go and see what happens.
