Re: service 4wd light comes on and off.4wd works fine.
I had the same problem with mine. Also, my lights on my 4wd switch would all go out intermittently. I replaced the switch on the dashboard (~$80 at the dealership) and have not had the problem since. I would try this before replacing the encoder motor, since that costs somewhere in the neighborhood of $350.

Hummer 4wd service light reset Questions & Answers - Fixya
www.fixya.com > Forum > Tags > 4wd service light reset Hummer h2 2003 55000 mill ... service 4wd the liht is on all time Remote the battery wire from the car for 20 ... My 2006 H3 will not come out of 4 wheel drive?
Well it could be the selector switch, but I doubt it. Generally, the service light means something is not working that the computer controls. Solenoids and valves are a couple of possibilities. The transfer case is shifted by solenoids commanded by the body computer based on the switch position on the dash. You should be able to have a shop scan the body computer for trouble codes and proceed from there. A basic code reader may not access the body computer.
Is the Service 4WD light coming on? Do the light on the 4x4 selector switch indicate the proper selection and are on steady after a few seconds? If there is no Service 4WD light on and the selector switch light are correct, the only place for the problem to be is the Transfer Case. Has the Transfer Case fluid been changed at 50K mile intervals? This is very important.
IF THIS IS THE FIRST TIME THIS LIGHT HAS EVER COME ON, AND YOU HAVENT BEEN PUTTING THE 4WD UNDER ANY STRESS, IT MAY JUST BE A LOW FLUID LVL IN THE TRANSNFER CASE. IF FLUID LVL IS FINE THEN THE SENSOR THAT SCREWS INTO THE TRANSFER CASE HAS TAKEN A DUMP, REPLACE, AND THE LIGHT SHOULD GO OUT AFTER THE ENGINE RUNS A CYCLE. MAKE SURE THAT THE 4WD ISNT PARTIALY ENGUAGED, PUT THE TRUCK IN 4WD AND DRIVE A FEW BLOCKS THEN STOP DISENGUAGE AND SEE IF THAT WORKS..
I have a 2000 silverado same problem... Dealer told me that there is a part called actuator sensor on the underneath that just needs cleaned...I still need to locate where it is though so I too can fix mine.
You should be fine to drive it home, as long as you don't drive it like that all year. There are a few things that activate the 4WD and one of the components has a failure and needs to be addressed. Good luck and hope this helps.
