Question about 2006 Toyota RAV4

Key won't turn

My 2006 Toyota Rav4 won't turn on. Key will not move. Any lights operated by buttons or switches do work as do headllights, but directional signals do not. It is as if the steering wheel and key are frozen. We have tried jiggling the steering wheel.

Hi yes we did try moving the steering wheel, maybe not pull down hard enough and try key at same time. Had steering wheel lock on Toyota Corolla but this is not the same thing. Wonder if this is some fail safe for low battery? or?

I followed Toyota Ed's advice and it worked perfectly.

No fail safe for alow battery; just a mechanical means of locking the steering wheel if someone ripped the ignition out of the column, the thief would not be able to steering the vehicle. Look at the front wheels...are they turned left or right? If so, it's locked. Turn the steering wheel to the direction that the wheels are turned to, PULL HARD, and turn the key at the same time. Let me know.

Try pulling down hard on the steering wheel while turning the key at the same time. Your steering cloum nay be "locked", and the abovementioned procedure should release it. Let me know if it works.

You are very welcome, glad to help.
Now, since you know "how to release it"; here is a tip: Turn the key off, and pull it out. Turn the wheel to the left, and wait for it to lock. Observe where it locks. Unlock it, and repeat the procedure, turn to the right. Observe again. Now you will know where the wheel locks, and if you avoid having the wheel close to those locations, the wheel will never lock on you again!
The graciousness of a FixYa rating for my assistance would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks for choosing FixYa.

My brake lights on my Toyota 1997 Rav4 will not turn off. I believe I need a stop light switch. Is this something I can easily do on my own? How?

it will be located next to the brake pedal arm. removing it and replacing it is not that hard.
adjustments to make it work correctly is simply moving it set the plunger to operate the brake lights when the brakes pedal is pushed down

Oil change light.

On my 06, Set the display to Trip A and turn key to OFF. Hold the Trip reset down and turn key to ON (do not start RAV4). Wait about 5 sec until it displays 00000. Turn key to OFF and it should be reset.

I just did this procedure 5 mins ago on my 2007 RAV....some procedures state to do it from the ODO position but that will not work....use the procedure below.

Set odometer to Trip A
Turn the key off
press and hold the ODO button.
Turn key to ON
Continue holding button while the light goes through the series of the ----countdown and then flashes 0000. Release the button and turn key to OFF.

Thats it!
