Thank You sooo much Thunderbolz this is the best information I have had so far.I finally got frustrated I had not read your post yet (unfortunately) and took my chrismas money and took it to the shop but $329.00 and a $5.99 fuse later I still have the prob. They put a new alternator on it new battery cable ends, Battery tested good ...I tested it.... (but they tried to sell me one of those too for$129.00 and wanted to charge me another $20.00 to put it in) think not... However when I got the jeep back from the shop it seemed fine. drove it for 1 1/2 days and noticed that the charging gauge was slowly going down. The next morning battery was dead.Needless to say I was XXXXXXpissed!
so I took it back to the shop and told them what the problem was and they basically told me to hit the road....I got suspicious and took my old alternator....(I have the core because I went and bought the new one in case I needed one they wouldnt be able to charge me $200.00 for it)... to get it checked and Guess what it checked good... good.omg,,, i was really pissed then.I didnt need an alternator. Well I got one now they installed it and I cant take it back..
So now armed with your information I will now do it myself and show those idiots at TAKE TEN AUTO they are stupid.
OK I left this post open..... ....and it is now 2hrs later and I already found 1 problem they didnt.. the 60 amp fuse for the generator output was blown so i was running strictly on a fully charged battery for a day and a half....Ok so far so good alternator working fine battery fully charged. Now the fun part i have have to find out why they blew so I will be checking for shorts. I will post when I find out more.I have an omh meter and basic testlight in hand.see ya later,
    thanks again Thunderbolz you rock

The best way to look at this problem is with a12 volt test light then remove the ground cable from the battery turn every thing off inside the car close all doors and remove keys then connect testlight to battery cable and touch the test light point probe to the negitive battery post if test light lights up for more than three seconds and stays on you have draw on the system. dont panic it maybe just a glove box light or door switch. if suspect a circuit simply un hook it retest again .if you open a door that will make light test come on recheck all doors closed. if you still have test light on locate fuse box and remove one fuse at a time until test goes out while holding door switch in.when locate circut use wiring diagram to assist from ther. if the light does not light up check altenator output volt meter shoud be 13.2 -15.5 volts when running.

Check the cables and cable connections to the battery to make sure they are tight and free of corrosion. Test the battery and make sure it doesn't have a bad or dead cell in it which would cause it to not have sufficient amperage to start the motor.

I just bought my son a 1996 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo. The battery and alternator were both recently replaced by the previous owner. He drove the car 2 days no problem. Today the battery was draining as...

the alternator failed this is usually a chrylser and jeep dodge isue the bearing fails and the alternator quits charging the if the light comes on its usually alternator but on some jeeps the light dosent come on because it reads that it is charging

the other thing that it could be is the battery shot on ya the only thing you can do to see if its a good battery do a battery acid test

I have a 95 jeep cherokee laredo. The battery suddenly started dying. We got a new battery. Still died. Installed new alternater and charged battery. The jeep ran for about an hour and died again. What's...

First: Are your Battery Cables (inside) and Battery Post nice and shiney? It is amazing how corroded/oxidized cables and post will kill a battery. Get then bright and shiney.
To test the Alternator. Start the Vehicle. You can Jump it if you have to. With the Engine running, disconnect the Negative Cable from the Battery. If the Engine dies, it is a bad alternator.
Was the "new" Alternator new or remanufactured?
Was it the correct alternator inespecially 'amps' for your particular vehicle?
Take the "new" alternator off and have it tested at auto parts store where you bought it.
Any remanufactured alternator may pass the factory inspection but will fail at the auto parts store. Just because it came out of a new box, and looks new, doesn't mean it works new.
Always when buying and part with a "motor" attached to it from an autoparts store, insist that the new one gets bench tested.
If this does not fix the problem:
Are your belts slipping? Worm out, loose or slipping belts will not turn the alternator pulley correctly and draw the battery dead.
Inspect the Red Positive Wire coming off the Alternator back to the battery. Look for any burnt, melted, or shorted areas.
The Battery Starts the vehicle. The Alternator runs the engine and trickle charges the battery.

My 95 grand cherokee starts fine but isnt charging

Pretty sure the regulator on those is in the computer (I know...really dumb...) There is a way to wire around it using an older style regulator but it will keep the check engine light on and may not pass inspection like that.

When you put the jumper cables on, put the key in the drivers door lock and unlock the door to deactivate the factory alarm.
