Question about 2002 Jeep Liberty

1 Answer

Engine knocks like diesel

All of a sudden my 3.7 ltr Liberty began knocking badly. I took it in for a tune up and oil change since it was due and the problem has actually gotten worse. Power is fine, oil level is normal, but the sound is horrible. Literally sounds as if it were empty inside. My oil sensor light has not turned on either. I'm very concerned. It has 107,000 miles on the clock.

I had the same problem, but i wasnt lucky enough for it to be the bearing under the motor. After pulling the entire motor (and half the front end in the process) 5 of the rods on the inside of the motor have to be machined due to scarring. I dont know how it happened because i kept regular maintenance on the truck. I also need to find a re-ringing kit to complete the repair, which i cant seem to find online anywhere. Good luck with your problem, i know mine has been a 6-month pain. Mine also only has 108,000 miles on it, which is way to soon for this type of problem, especially when i have a mountaineer with 200,000+ miles on it.

A loud knocking sound could be a variety of things. On the top of the list is Bad connecting rod bearing and main bearings in the bottom end of the engine. Bad lifters may also be a problem. I had to burst your bubble but a loud noise in your engine, like you describe may be alot of pre-mature internal engine wear may be cause by lack of maintenance. You should have it check by a professional before you invest money into fixing it. Remember if the cost of the repairs exceeds that retail value of the vehicle. Its time for a new one. Good Luck

I have a 2004 Dodge Durango 4.7. About 3 months ago I replaced the oil pump, but believe it was the oil pick up valve that was the problem. 2 days ago, the engine began knocking loudly the entire time it...

Try using a MOPAR oil filter...These cheap after market filters are allowing the oil to drip down into the pan and there is none in the top of the motor on cold starts.

What is it when the motor begans to knock when you start it up on 2004 jeep liberty i wasw told it may be the timing change

It could be the engine bearings are dry, this is a dry start, cause of oil pump pressure being poor,or the rod,or main bearings, either can cause this.

Oil light comes on and the engine begins to make a knocking sound

how much oil is left in the engine ?
the smoke was probaly oil burning, the knocking could be from low oil pressure, this could be very bad.check the oil and coolant levels and repost and let me know how they are.if any oil shows on the dipstick smell it and see if it smells burnt.

Knock in my engine

DO NOT DRIVE or run this car until you resolve this.  Irreperable damage may already have been one, but if not, don't press your luck.
Sounds like you don't have any oil pressure, could be
oil pump bad (pretty rare unless you have 300K miles or more no regular oil changes) or
oil pickup screen plugged up, If you or someone didn't change the oil regularly this is likely
obstruction in oil line (very unlikely)
defective oil filter or pressure relief valve (pretty unlikely)
good luck,
pleas rate all soutions
