Re: 2001 Ford escort zx2 wants to die while idling
The check engine light indicates a problem. You need to have the codes read. Most parts stores do this for free. Write down the codes and ask them what they mean, and what u should do. You can come back here if u need more info.

I doubt the two problems are related. The computer uses an idle speed control valve to regulate idle speed. The valve controls the amount of air entering the intake. You should have a check engine light on and also a stored trouble code for the valve. It could also be a problem with the throttle plate in the throttle body.
There are several heat shields that can squeak or you could just need a new serpentine belt. Unfortunately, a lot of things can cause a 'squeak' but without knowing what area it comes from, if it changes with engine speed, or vehicle speed, I can't give you any pinpoint information.
It is probably the PCV hose. The elbows on them are soft and often develop holes and allow un-metered air in and cause a lean condition. Usually the car drives fine but could idle low or die at stops. You can order a new PCV hose from Ford for about thirty bucks.

You didn't call off the code they found but O2 sensers effect a lot of driving but not the idle. High or low fuel pressure a vacume leak an air bypass motor stuck shut or bad. are more likly . The auto zone guys are great but their not mechanics. Their story is change parts till you fix it and they want to sell as many parts that you'll buy
Get yourself a compression tester and remove all spark plugs and proceed to check the compression for this motor the readings should all be above 110 psi, the car may have jumped a tooth on the timing belt and requires a new belt to be installed.
Press the brake pedal with the engine idling, do you hear any hissing? if so it is a leaky brake booster, the vacuum leak will cause a stall, another issue with this car is sludge in the throttle valve and idle speed control air-bypass valve, clean them both with carb spray with the engine running, use about 1/2 the can, hold the idle high or the engine will stall, then disconnect the battery for five minutes, reconnect and drive a few miles, if the stall is sludge related then this should correct the issue.
