Question about 1991 Toyota Supra

1 Answer

Hard shifting My 91 supra shifts hard and at high rpm the first two times it shifts when the car is driven for the first time each day or if it has sat for a few hours but after the first two shifts it does fine. Does any one know what is going on?

What I mean by hard shifting is that it wont shift until close to redline rpm and then it shifts so hard it snaps your head back.

Yes I have alrety changed filter and fluid, I hoped that would fix it but no luck.

Has the trans ever been serviced, new fluid and filter? worn out fluid and a dirty filter can contribute to issues like this

Does this trans have a throttle valve cable?, if so it may need to be re-adjusted, it controls when the trans shifts based on the throttle position, if it doesn't have this type of hydraulic control you may have an issue with one of the sensors that controls the shift points, a common issue is the throttle position sensor (TPS) and the MAF/MAP (Mass Airflow Meter) sensor, have you had a trouble code test run to see if any codes are present? if not Kragen does it for free as well as others like Auto Zone, let me know what u find and I will make every effort to help u figure this out.

The first thing I have to ask you is When was the last time the transmission was serviced? Transmission fluid and filter change?
A thumbs up would be greatly appreciated if this answer is helpful to you. Have a GREAT DAY and GOD BLESS YOU.

High RPM when changing gears

If it was me, the first step would be taking it to a transmission shop for a tranny-fluid change (unless you are a real wrench and can do it yourself). The transmission fluid can get dirty, breakdown from heat and/or general use/abuse, and the filter can become clogged.

I have 1983 Nissan Datsun 280ZX. It sat for nearly 2 years not driven much. I checked the fluids but can not locate where to add gear oil. A few days after I got the car, I noticed when I shift gears I get...

there is most likely not hte gear iol level since it has sat, however there is probably a lot of rust on the flay wheel and clutch disk. does this noise sound like a hard grinding (BUZZ CHUCK) or a faint sluicing?

1999 durango shifts hard runs up high rpm then shifts. only between first and second. if you increase speed moderayely it will jump out of second and into first with very high rpm

I have seen alot of governor pressure issues whith those and sometimes the oxygen sensor can short out they share the same ground so if whoever works on this changes governor solenoid and pressure switch bring this to there attention and change the 02 sensor at same time.

It's possible, especially if the used trans sat unused for a while. When you change the filter, make sure that the trans has fresh, proper fluid.

Timing Dpecs for Toyota Supra 87 6 cylinder

1987 non-turbo: 10 deg Before Top Dead Center (BTDC) @700 rpm
1987 Turbo: 10 deg BTDC @650 rpm.

To set the timing, you will need to connect a jumper wire between terminals E1 and TE1 on the diagnostic terminal. This diagnostic terminal is located just aft of the engine compartment fuse box. It is a black plastic box marked "diagnostic" on the cover, which flips open to reveal the terminals inside. There is a diagram on the inside of the cover which explains the terminal positions. On the Turbo model, you need to remove the forward section of the engine cover to gain access to the number one spark plug wire.
