The EGR valve (Exhaust Gas Recirculator) provides a path from ******** to nose of your engine, returning some of the exhaust fumes to the intake to supposedly improve tailpipe emissions.
Uh huh, I agree. Seems like a stupid idea and each car I have cheated (that couldn't tell I was cheating) has gained a little on gas mileage but never as much as 10%.
Your Ford apparently has a sensor to rat you out if you cheat it so the quantity of fumes isn't satisfying that sensor.
This could mean that the EGR is clogged (it's a small hole passing dirty exhaust fumes), failed, or the vacuum line that controls it is cracked or otherwise broken.

I need to know what the problem the p0401 what is the problem 1999 grand Victoria Ford 4.9

wow I wish ford could make a egr system that wouldn't fail as I've seen this one go a lot lately ! anyways the code is for insufficient flow in the egr system , this is a means to recirculate some of your exhaust back into your intake , as a means to reburn some of your excess fuel (emissions) , anyways it consists of a means to meter some of the exhaust , and control it (off/on) also to measure the amount that goes in , its part of the closed loop of the fuel inlet system , the fault code is specifically saying flow sensor cant detect any flow in the pipe , there can be a few causes for this including a bad flow sensor , all are from my opinion a poorly designed system (it doesn't self clean it's self ) as almost a guaranty every 60k miles your gonna have some problem with it

EGR FLOW INSUFFICIENT

On your EGR tube you have two hoses coming off of it. If you put them on in reverse you will get a code of insufficient flow. I put headers on and replaced EGR tube and valve and the flow sensor and that's the code that I received switched the hoses and solved the code

p0401 is egr flow insufficiant. check or remove and clean egr and port. and also check the vacuum lines to egr. Insufficient EGR flow frequently is caused by clogged EGR passageways.

The DPFE sensor has failed on you egr system .Replace just this part and don't let someone sell you a egr valve .The sensor is about$70 and faily easy to do .:)

also have them change the oxygen sensors, if it's deemed necessary. have someone reset the computer. if the light stays off, then you don't have to.

i found that the egr valves sometimes get clogged up with carbon and can be remedied by removing the valve and scraping the port clean .
