1997 lincoln continental air suspension

I have a 1997 lincoln continental in which the air suspension stopped working along with my power steering got harder to stear all at the sametime, i have checked all fuses, replaced the air suspension computer and compressor relay, there is no power to the shut off switch in the trunk, nothing on the message panel telling me the air system is off, the compressor works cause i put one end of a tester on the negative of the battery and when i put the other end of the light tester on one of the small wires on the air comprssor relay the compressor turns on but no air is going in to the bags cause i guess the solenoids are closed and not receiving any signal to open, i am going crazy trying to figure out what can be the problem since i have checked all fuses and replaced the air suspension computer and compressor relay, it is weird that the power steering got hard and the air suspension system stopped working all at the same time, does anyone have an idea what can be the problem, it seems like something is not letting power pass to the system ,i thought that replacing the computer would be the problem but it wasn't, please help me with ideas ,im going nuts

    i will try that for sure, but i had checked the fuses before i posted the problem and the fuses are both good, i will check the pins u mentioned, thanks

    i just got done checking the pins on the module, both fuses are good and there is power to the fuses, after checking the module plug, im only getting power to pin #1 when i turn the car on, but i have absolutely no power with the car on or off on pins # 36,37,56 ,57 and both fuses are good and working, my steering is also still hard

    wow i am so impressed by your expertise, i found that dark green and yellow cable from the fuse box to the connector broke in between the fuse box and the connector, it was broke right underneath the front fender on the driver side, you are the best, I dont know how to thank you, you have helped me save a ton of money, i spliced it and put everything back together and it is all working now to perfection, i am so happy, thanks so much and may God Bless you and your family, happy holidays, thanks again

    i have a lincoln continental 1999, changed air bags and i realised the new bags did not bring the o ring. open the trunk to shut off the suspension, went under the car to install the seal/o ring as i pulled the air valve heard ari come out,so i changed the rear driver seal/o ring also. thinking is was fine turn the car on and now nothing works? the drier or compressor does not work and the dash board lights are off too? im going bananas here! i changed the suspension relay hoping that was the problem and nothing...HELP!

There are 2 fuses for the air suspension module fuse #28 in the inst panel fuse box and fuse #22 in the power distribution box in engine compartment make sure the fuses are good the module controls the air susp and the variable steering if the fuses are ok you will have to see if there is power at the module pins # 1, 36, 37, 56, 57, 58

    the pins are all spliced together dark green and yellow wires they go to connector c189 at the firewall on driver's side pin37 make sure the circuit isn't open between the fuse to the connector and the connector to the module

    pins 36,37,56 ,57, 58 all join together to a splice in the module harness by where the harness splits off to the right rear brake sensor the dark green and yellow wire goes up to the front of the vehicle to connector C139 at the firewall on driver's side then the other side of the connector the wire goes to the fuse in the engine comp fuse box see if you have power to that connector if so there is an open from the connector to the module if there is no power at the connector there is an open from the fuse to the connector hope that helps

    I had the exact same problemm this post really helped me out though. Same dark green wire with yellow stripe had a pregnant open wire right out the connector into the harness between the tire splash gaurd and fender on the driver side. Thanks a bunch!!!!!!!!!!!! 0$$$$$$ money spent to fix this issue, jsut some wire and electrical tape. My suspension and steering are great. I also fixed 2 other unkown wires that were about to have the same issue..

Already converted from rear air bags suspension to non air.. but now my steering isn't right. what can that be?


Probably something to do with ride height settings in computer trying to compensate for some reason, do you still have front air bag suspension? You could try removing fuse for suspension.

You will have to go under your car, where the steering wheel shaft connects to the steering housing. there in that area you should see it screwed into the housing. should have some wires hooked to it.

Can not get the new air ride compressor to come on


Make sure the trunk switch is turned on. Your doorjam and trunk switches are wired into the Air-ride. They must sense the openings are closed before the lift compressor will work.

There are level controls for height. If the car was put on a lift without the switch being turned off, the positioner may be stretched beyond working.

Hard steering


You need the sensitivity switch to work to get more assist at lower speeds. Some slight changes in suspension geometry can occur if the Ride height is below standards.

Your best plan would be to take it in for a front end alignment where all components are inspected before any adjustments are made. Air the tires up to recommended pressure-cold temperatures can cause a drop in pressure.

The air bags when out......is it better to buy them new or just add the suspension?


Your best, with a Continental or Lincoln Navagator, to just
replace the air suspension with conventional shocks/struts,
after your vehicle is about 8 years old and you have put
time and money into previous air system problems

I just purchased a 1997 lincoln continental and the rear suspension deflates at night but when it is started in the morning,it reflates. Is this normal?


it should deflates only at trim height and shld stay at that level considering that there is no leak on the rear air suspension. Most probably leaking rear air suspension is the problem. The system works up to 45 minutes only after ignition off and will maintain the trim height

Is the fluid full enough? there should be a dipstick to tell where the level should be. Also is the belt tight enough? Wires loose?

1997 Lincoln Continental Suspension Conversion Problem


It could be a wheel speed sensor that went out or something... When working with the wiring, something could have just gotten crossed or tapped to get these codes as well. The compressor shouldnt be running anymore if everything was tied off properly. Take it in somewhere and have the codes cleared and that should fix the problem hopefully. I know AutoZone has a reader, but I do not know if they have they ability to clear the codes.
