2002 lincoln ls misfires in cylinder 1

My check engine light came on and the car started driving roughly so I let a mechanic check it out and he said the code was a misfire in cylinder one. He did a complete tune up on it but it still ran the same. Next he changed the coil pack but that didnt help either. I noticed the car stutters when i get up to about 42 mph. I also put some fuel cleaner in the gas tank just incase that was the problem but it wasnt. what could be the problem ?

Where is the coil pack for cylinder 5 located at for a 2002 lincoln ls

Hi, welcome to FixYa.com my name is Shawn and I will be answering your question.

They have an individual coil for every plug on this engine. Do you have a check engine light on if so if you retrieve the code it should be a P030X misfire code the X being a number between 1 and 8 identifying the cylinder that is misfiring. #1 being the passenger side front - #4 passenger rear #5 driver front #8 driver rear. They go in order 1-4 passenger side 5-8 driver side. If this is a 6 cylinder then coil 1 would be the passenger side front coil 3 would be the passenger side rear. Coil 4 would be the Driver side front and 6 would be the driver side rear. The coils are located under the center cover on the valve coves.

I hope my assistance helped you and resolved your concern, if you need further assistance please ask.

I have a 2002 lincoln ls v6 3.0..i started the car and the engine started to shake like its was gonna fall out then i would press the gas pedal and get no gas i shut it off n didnt drive it that day the...

if ur check engine light is on the shaking is most likely coils need to be replaced they might be misfiring, with the over heating issue which im also going thru if ur fan isnt running that will b ur issue, the worst possible outcome will be that ur leaking coolant fluid into the heads and is extremely expensive, new engine expensive as i was told, this is a common problem in these cars, besides electrical , good lookin car and thats probably the only thing going for it , still have mine but i get 2nd and 3rd opinions by mechanics that know what there doing which are hard to find, even ford service coudnt get answers , best thing to start with is to go to ur mechanic and get a diagnostic to see if ur getting a misfire, dont let them scare you when they get more then 1 code , on mine i had 5 codes come up , brung to another recommende mechanic and told him about the misfire and he changed coils , he did mention other codes but after the repair he reset the system and after 150 miles i passed my inspection with no codes, o yeah i had full power and no shaking , its still cost a bit cause recommended using motor craft parts, i hope its not for the worst , good luck

Have 2005 lincoln aviator - has miss at 30-55 MPH - no codes replaced all coils ( ford) & spark plugs (twice) - repair vacuum leak at PCV Still misses -- no codes -- help

The COPS (coils) may have shorted the drivers in the PCM (computer). You should get a misfire code for each cylinder misfiring though.

Slim possibility, but very expensive unless you have a service contract.

2003-2005 Aviator MERCURY: 2003-2004 Marauder
ISSUE: Some 1999-2004 Navigator, 2002-2003 Blackwood, 2003-2005 Aviator, 2003-2004 Marauder and 2003-2004 Mustang vehicles built before 12/19/2004 equipped with 4.6L 4V/5.4 4V engine may exhibit a runs rough, lacks power, and engine misfire, prompted by a MIL light and DTC codes P0301, P0302, P0303, P0304, P0305, P0306, P0307, P0308, and P0316.
ACTION: Diagnose engine for engine misfire concern. If diagnostics determine an engine misfire which is characterized by leakage through exhaust valve(s), only replace the affected cylinder head(s).
SERVICE PROCEDURE FOR VEHICLES WITH RUNS ROUGH/MISFIRE CONDITION:
  1. Perform relative compression check on all cylinders. If abnormal, check cylinder leakage and actual compression for "low" cylinders refer to Workshop Manual (WSM), Section 303-00.
  2. If leakage/compression check indicates a valve train concern, per valve train diagnostics in WSM, Section 303-00, replace cylinder head and cam assembly, pipe plugs and timing chain tensioner, per procedure outlined in WSM, Section 303-01.
  3. If cylinder leakage and compression tests are inconclusive, perform misfire diagnostic, per TSB 05-22-8. NOTE: DO NOT TRANSFER SPARK PLUGS. INSTALL NEW SPARK PLUGS IN REPLACEMENT CYLINDER HEAD AND CAM ASSEMBLY. NOTE: THE ENGINE MISFIRE CONCERN IS TYPICALLY EXHIBITED ON THE LEFT HAND CYLINDER HEAD AND RARELY ON THE RIGHT HAND CYLINDER HEAD. UNLESS CONFIRMED, THE RIGHT HAND CYLINDER HEAD SHOULD NOT BE REPLACED AS AN "EXTRA MEASURE" SERVICE PRECAUTION. NOTE: THE REPLACEMENT CYLINDER HEAD WILL NOT IMPROVE OR REDUCE ENGINE HORSEPOWER OR TORQUE ABOVE ADVERTISED LEVELS.

Have the vehicle scanner for codes anyway. The fault may not be a hard one. Then depending on what is found do the repair. If no codes are found have a technican do a cylinder leakage and injector lbalance test. This will tellus if the cylinder is leaking vacuum and whether the injectors are firing.

You can get an ACTRON scanner from Sears. The regular or plus version ($179). Harbor Freight sells scanners too.
But, you can go to AUtozone or most other stores and get the codes read for free when the CEL is on.
Get codes, report back before buying anything.
Sometimes codes are caused by other engine problems that influence the sensors and turn the light on.

The rough idle will usually be a misfire code.

I checked for TSBs. None found for 3.9L engine

2002 Lincoln LS misfire on cylinder 6. Replaced coil with new one from O'Rielys. Still saying misfire on 6. Installed new plugs at 100K. Now has 119K.

A bad coil pack can foul out the spark plugs. I have also been told the computer might need to be reset for around $100. You must use Motorcraft OE plugs for this car to run at its best is what my mechanic told me.

These cars are famous for leaky seals where the valve cover interfaces with the cylinder head, at the spark plug journals. They fill with oil, short the coils and cause a misfire. Driving it any significant distance can destroy your catalytic converters ad unburnt fuel ignites therein, creating inferno-like conditions and a fire hazard too. You'll get a "300 code", such as 301 if cylinder 1 is misfiring, 302 for # 2, etc. Pull the coil off the spark plug for that cylinder and if it is moist at all, that's your issue. Have new seals put in, or you'll just keep blowing coils at $50 a whack.
