It sounds like a problem with the brake switch.

My 2001 Ford Mustang v-6 automatic gear shifting lever wont move

The shift interlock does not allow the car to shift out of park unless the brake pedal is depressed.  Quick fix is with the car running to set the parking brake and turn the car to off and remover the key.  Put the key back in and turn one click to on.  Shift the car into neutral and you can start the car and go.  The repair for this is either the brake switch located on the brake pedal being replaced.  I had a broken wire leading to the switch that caused the problem.  It also can be a blown fuse.

Gear shifting problems in 2001 Ford Mustang

There is a solenoid that keeps you from putting the car in drive if you don't have your foot on the brake. There are several things that can cause the solenoid from working. You may want to start looking there before replacing a cable

Can't shift

You probably burnt the clutch up.
A good indicator is hard to get into 1st with out grinding as well as reverse, and over all poor ability to shift in any gear.

air in the slave cylinder is more then likely not your problem.
Its pretty hard to do.

Car wont shift into gear

did you check that you still have brake lights ?

Ford has the shift interlock, so if you loose brake lamps, the shifter will not move out of park.

Quick test, turn the key to the on position ( do not start ), and see if the gear shifter will move to neutral.
