Question about 1993 Honda Accord

Idle goes nuts while warming up and now while driving....any help

When I start my car I know the O2 sensor works to find the correct idle to warm up the car and get it going. It recently started to rev up and down and up and down and so on until it found the right level but now it just keeps reving and reving and reving like crazy....even while I'm driving.

I thought if I just warm it up then it would calm down but it doesn't. I just got my water pump and timing belts changed but thought it wouldn't get this bad and it does. Any suggestions beyond getting a new O2 sensor ? and, are they easy to change?

Thanks, Greg

Check your throttle position sensor. this has nothing to do with your water pump. when the TPS goes out it does what your talking about. it revs up and down all the time. it is fairly easy to replace

Why are you convicting the idle control valve? was it properly diagnosed? Could be coolant sensor, intake sensor,O2 sensors etc. Check it out first.

2004 ford taurus dohc doesnt want to idle when cold and when warm at stop signs after driving for awhile it acts up like its flooding out. it will idle warm

Sounds like an O2 sensor, however you might try cleaning the MAF sensor in the air intake hose with carb cleaner (blow it out after spraying it and put it back in). MAF sensors are expensive and you can clean them with spray cleaner or starting fluid and usually not have to buy one. O2 sensors are cheaper and won't cleanup using this procedure.

I had same problems w/ my 99 Chateau 5.4L. EGR-Ensure port into intake and pipe from exhaust are clear using low pressure compressed air. Pull vacuum on EGR diaphram and ensure it opens and closes smoothly. If this checks out then problem is probably in the EGR sensor (mine had both ports and hoses clogged w/ aluminum corrosion from the sensor, cleaned out hoses and lines to exhaust pipe w/ compressed air, ended up having to change the sensor). IDLE AND O2 SENSOR- Caused by vacuum leaks in the PCV line (line is plastic wrapped w/foam insulation; was cracked under the insulation; both rubber end connectors at manifold and pcv valve were softened, collapsed and leaking; allowing excess air into the manifold after the mass air flow sensor which throws off the O2 sensors. engine computer does not read O2 sensors until after engine is warmed up which is why idle is fine until then).

not a oo2 but maybe a IAC (idle air controll ) you should try and clean it with carb cleaner before replacing it.

1991 dodge colt won't idle when engine is cold.

probably oil, it may be too thick when it's cold but once it warms up it liquefies and your engine runs smoothly. you could try changing oil, I'm guessing if you have a high performance oil the chances this is the problem may be greater since high performance things are usually geared towards working well when everything is hot
