Question about 1996 Ford Windstar

1 Answer

Battery discharging Our 1996 Windstar has had an ongong problem of not starting due to a completely discharged battery. This is anytime of the year. And it can go for months before it happens again. We have went through two new batteries, and recently had a new altenator installed, all in the last two years, and still the problem persists.

About a week ago, at the urging of a family member, I disconnected the negative battery cable at the end of the last use of the Van one evening. The next morning. after reconnecting the battery cable, the Van started okay. There is a short circuit for sure somewhere. Your problem solving suggestion would have shown that as well. Thank you, and will continue to check each circuit until I find the right one, perhaps removing fuses might prove effective in that regard.

I would start buy disconnecting the negitive battery cable from the frame and sand down where it connect, then reinstal and tighten it. Any other grounding straps like from the alternator also need to be clean and tight. Lastly at night in the dark, disconnect the positive battery cable and while putting it on and of see if it sparks. If it does, you have somethng that is staying on draining the battery while not running.  Hope this helps.

Maybe install a isolation switch to isolate the car when not in use .as a bonus you have just installed an anti theft device aswell

Sounds like the battery is dead & not capable of
being charged

You already know the alternator should put out
14.2 volts even with all accy's on

The only thing that changes is the current output
when you load a circuits, not voltage

You may be able to just buy the regulator &
replace yourself

Have to OHM out the diodes when it is apart

You should also check diodes for leakage with
an amp meter with KO/EO

Also check for diode current ripple with engine running

Why does my 96 Cadillac Eldorado battery keep discharging?

First step have the battery tested, a bad cell can cause a internal drain and kill the battery, if the batt is ok then check for interior lights like visors that stay on or interior light that come on by themselves at night due to defective door switches.

Electrical system drains battery when vehicle not in use

Normal for a 3 year old battery. it has internal resistance that discharges it self.

Disconnecting the battery will not help.

A way to see if vehicle is causing the discharge, but it will dump the radio and clock settings....take off one of the battery terminals and put a test light (12 V.) between the terminal on the battery and the cable end. If the test light comes on,there is something ON in the car.

If the computer memory is dumped due to low voltage, the car has to "re learn" all of it's setting and will usually not idle well at all!

Please have the battery load tested after it has been fully charged.

Battery keeps dying on 2001 Ford Windstar.

Check your battery terminals make sure they are clean and corrosion free.
Also check all ...A-L-L courtesy lights in your car. there are some ceiling mounted lights that are passenger operated and may be on... Also check your glove compartment and consoles for lights.
Also check for charger cords... These have indicator lights and sometimes can drain the batt as well.
Also, under the hood, is a gravity activated lamp . Open the hood and make sure that it's going off and staying off as the hood closes...
Let me know if you find anything...

My car is not start engine about 5 year

The 12 Volt auxiliary battery that powers the computer gets discharged if the car isn't started for a long time due to the security system and memory for radio settings, etc, power drain. You can get it going again by hooking jumper cables or a battery charger to the auxiliary battery that is stored on the driver's side of the trunk.
