Problem for Chevrolet 1998 Blazer

Transmission

I just rebuilt my transmission about a month ago it worked fine for a while then i noticed it was like it would shift up and down about a half a second apart if i had the throttle in the right spot. then the other day I was driving and all of the sudden it was like it started slipping. I got it home and hooked it to a scan tool and code P1870 was stored. Now there is like a rattling sound or like a spinning metal to metal contact that comes and goes but it isnt grinding the sound is intermittent and the slipping gets worse when the sound gets louder. It used to run at about 2000 rpm at 70 mph after the problem occured it started to run about 2400 rpm at 70 but the kicker is it doesnt do it all the time sometimes it works fine till it warms up but usually it will slip before the end of the day. the fluid is burned. i think it is probably either the pump or the torque converter but im not sure the pump was dropped when i rebuilt the transmission but i didnt see any major damage to the housing. it is a 1998 4l60e transmission 4x4

- the trans doesnt work properly at crusing speed and acceleration

Dec 09, 2008

- if i cut a seal wouldnt that cause it to mess up from the start. if worked fine for about 1000 miles. i did kinda think that it was the converter. i didnt change the shift solenoid pack and if it was a check ball issue it would have messed up in the beginning and i have been driving it for about 400 miles since it started messing up and the problem isnt getting worse i put some lucas in it and it is actually startin to work fine sometimes untill about 15 miles

Dec 09, 2008

- i dont have the money for another trans. my auto teacher said it could be the tcc solenoid i did a road test with a scan tool but i couldnt get it to mess up it just kept workin like it was supposed to

Dec 09, 2008

- im not sure if it is a slip now that i think of it the rpms go up but they dont shoot up like it would if it was a slip it still feels like the trans is workin but its in a lower gear i did get a dtc P1870 but i cleared it and it hasnt came back since

Dec 09, 2008

- its kinda brown and i had to get a second opinion on the smell because i couldnt tell if it was burned

Dec 09, 2008

- k i will try the solenoid first because it is cheaper and there was something like an antidrainback valve that didnt come with the new one i got because i broke the snout and had to get a new one but i didnt think it would hurt because the old one didnt have one of those in it

Clarification Request

No matter what the problem the trans needs to come out be torn down to see what u did wrong, why not buy an exhcange unit?

Sounds like a Valve body issue, are you sure you got all the check balls and such back in correctly? did you replace the solenoid shift pack? You may have also cut the O ring on the pump housing, if it leaks you will get slipping, as the clutches wear from low pressure the problem gets worse fairly fast.

-   yes this sounds like the issue i am having . i am looking at the tcc apply solenoid. too. it could have some sludge stopping it from moving properly . i can go for miles with out issue and then it acts like the stall speed is several hundred rpm higher . or is in a lower gear. i know theres a solenoid issue because i have it drop from od to 3rd and it wont go back to od . if i turn the truck off and restart it, it acts fine . there are lots of little holes to be foulded by sludge.i would power the solenoids and clean them out with brake cleaner while they are open and cyclel them several times while sparying the cleaner thru them ....unless you soaked every thing and blew out every passage and ensured the were spotless this would happen ... i was waiting for a secon opinion but have yet to get one . i never dismantled the trans and it the same as yours. also if you did not flush the cooler lines and all the sludge out of it it will stay there untill it causes a problem .like the one we are having
you said the fliud was dirty ,so its possible theres still **** in the system

THE NOISE IS PROBABLY CONVERTOR. could have also cut a seal during assembly with fluid burnt and slipping it is gonna have to come out and be torn down

- a cut seal can show up immediatly or down the road. have seen both ways.tcc solenoid is not gonna cause tranny to slip it can cause the up down issue you feel.

- HOW BURNT IS FLUID?

Dec 09, 2008

- kinda brown in a month is not good!!!!! just guessing i would lean towards torque convertor.
