The filter is in the front center of the Eng, under a Black cover that has a Hex top for a Metric wrench, the size of the wrench? I forgot, hey I'm old!. Clean the area around it with an arisol spray like Brake Clean. Just unscrew it and pull the filter out and replace it with a new one, wet the seal around the top with new oil.

SOURCE: where is an oil filter

Follow the air intake hose to the throttle body at the engine. Beneath it you'll see a black top with a raised hexagonal protrusion. This is the canister that contains the oil filter. You'll need a 32mm socket to remove the top to access the filter.

Where is the oil filter

If this engine is the 2.2 ecotech engine the oil filter is a internal cartridge filter located on the left side (driverside) of the engine right next to the intake manifold. There should be about a 3" black plastic cap that looks like the top is designed for a socket or wrench. The oil filter is contained below this cap on the ecotech engine.

Hard down shifts

Check the transmission fluid level, see if there is any foaming in the fluid which is bad, and condition, If the fluid is low the transmission fluid pressure could be low and if the transmission fluid filter is dirty, that could also be restricted the fluid flow.
The transmission fluid should be bright red like strawberry in colour, if it's dark like burgundy then it's time to change the transmission oil and filter. The hard down shifting could be a servo that is sticking caused by dirt in the fluid, have a Transmission shop service the transmission and scan the car's ECM for any codes that may be causing your shifting problem.
Good luck and hope this helps.
