I have the same problem on my 2002 pathfinder. Started with the odometer illumination would stay off until the car warmed up. Now it is out all the time. Now the left instrument cluster illumination (tach & temp guage)stays off until the car warms up.

I have same problem first the right the the left ...right never comes on now but left comes on unpredictably

mine does the same thing only when it's cold, and not all the time just at random times

Yes, I have seen what seems to be the same issue. 2002 Nissan Pathfinder SE. Intermittently the right half of the instrument panel (tachometer/temp gauge) do not illuminate when the headlights are turned on, sometimes they come back on later, sometimes not at all. More common on colder days. Also have seen the odometer/trip gauge not illuminate (with or without the tach/temp gauge). Once or twice I have noticed the left half of the panel (speedometer/gas guage) not immediately illuminate when headlights turned on--but then come on a few seconds later.

I am in the same boat! 2002 Pathfinder SE. My tachometer and temp guage don't light up right away or at all. It had been sporadic...but now that it's January in New York, it seems to be more frequent. This is my first winter with the truck so I don't know if it's temperature related or simply a new problem that is getting worse as time marches on. The answer mentioned bulbs. I'm not sure how to get to them. There are some more touchy lighting issues for the seat-heater and the right bulb on the rear license plate. That appears to be the only one addressed in the owners manual.

Same problem here. Tach and Temp backlighting is out. Speedometer and gas gauge lighting is fine. Was intermittent at 1st and very infrequent. Duration it was off was short. When the lighting would go out it would cause the volume on the stereo to go to 0 on its own. I simply would turn the volume back up, but lighting remained off. Tach and temp light went out 2 days ago for what appears to be for good now. Would like to fix it because it is annoying, but don't want to get taken to the cleaners by the dealer. Any suggestions?

I'm having the same problem, except it's the left side, gas gauge and speedometer. I have a 2002 Pathfinder LE. The problem started about a year ago infrequently, but now they are off and aren't coming back on. I have the issue with the stereo as well, except mine gets louder all of a sudden. This has happened since about a month after we bought it new. Still a sporadic occurrence, but hurts the ears when it happens. Both issues seem to only happen when it's cold outside.

I posted on Jan. 31st and quite honestly, was skeptical about the cold weather theory because I live in Florida. However, that being said, the second the outside tempurate hit 80 degrees today, the right side of my dash re-lit up. This was the 1st time we hit 80 in almost 3 weeks. If this is truely the cause, does anyone have an explanation or solution?

I also just started having an issue with the left side of my instrument panel not being lit in my 02 Pathfinder LE. In addition I had an issue with the stereo volume going to full blast all by itself. Any one know what the fix is for these issues?

I have the same problem with my 2002 pathfinder left side (speedometer and gas gauge) light going out at random times.

  • Anonymous Apr 01, 2009

    Has anyone solved this problem?

  • Anonymous Apr 10, 2009

Yep, left side light goes out, mostly when the weather is cold. I also have the volume control that takes on a mind of it's own (from off to blasting). Finally the driver side seat works up and downot back and forth.

Cold weather theory is false Dean's solution worked. Per Dean:

Had the same problem, but with the odometer. Turns out that he base of the bulb is loose. Very easy fix.

remove the cluster housing (2 screws)
    remove the cluster (4 screws)

tighten the bases of the light bulbs on the back of the instrument cluster.

when i fixed the light, out of curiosity, i checked all the lights on the cluster. Indeed, quite a few of them were kinda loose. I tightened them all. Chances are you are seeing the same problem. So before spending big $$$ at the mechanics. Try this easy fix yourself. Took me 10 minutes. You only need a phillips screwdriver.

There are bulbs behind the dash that light the gauges, you may want to take a look at the bulb on that side.

Instrument panel won't light

Check your fuses - do your other interior lights work okay? Look at your fuses first - then start checking wiring behind the instrument cluster. Is anything loose or hanging down?

I am trying to figure out how to get the door panels off of a 1987 nissan pathfinder without breaking hard to replace parts. I get as far as the power window controls and can't seem to find the trick to...

I use a flatLfork tool to pop the clips off around the outside, then leave the controls on the panel.
When you get the panel off, then unplug the controls from behind.

Instrument panel removal

I suggest you invest in a 1 year subscription to www.alldatadiy.com It is what I used when I disassembled the dash on my car, and is way better than a paper manual. Another tip is to keep some zip lock bags, and a sharpie handy, and seperate and label all hardware that you remove to help your reassembly

Speedo not working on nissan pathfinder

check the speed sensor either at the transmission or on the front wheel axle. You have to remove the front wheel , rotor until you get down to the shaft. The speed sensor is right there on the passenger side of your car.
