How to repair your vehicle's worn out remote control key

When I saw a friend's worn out remote car key, I knew that other people must have the same problems, and that somebody must sell replacement parts for repairing the case (fob).
The flexible rubber side of her key was torn and one of the button inserts had fallen out making it difficult to unlock her car doors. Water could get into the electronics and ruin it.
I found the necessary parts kit on Amazon for $3.99, shipping included from China. After repairing the first of her keys without any problems, I tried to order another for her spare key through Amazon, but it was no longer available. I found it on eBay for $1.75, shipping included from Hong Kong. It took the first key 15 days to arrive. I just order the second kit.
To find a replacement for your key fob, copy and paste the link that follows, into your browser, enter your vehicle info, and keep scrolling until you find the right one at the right price.

This is the worn out remote key for a Toyota RAV4.

This is the refurbished key after replacing the fob (case), using only the electronic module from the original. The key blank is molded into the fob, just like the original. All that remains is getting the key cut. All parts fit perfectly, and in my opinion, the new fob is better designed than the original.

First pop the case open by twisting a screwdriver in the slot on the side, just like you do when changing the battery.

The new fob has plastic buttons that fit into compartments in a hard plastic case instead of the flexible rubber buttons that wore out. The rubber gasket (upper center in the picture) holds the buttons in place and provides waterproofing in the completed assembly.

Remove the electronics component from the old key.

That's the switch side of the electronics component showing in this picture.

Insert the new buttons in the holes in the face of the new fob. This was a three function remote that didn't include the trunk release, so that was just an extra part in this case.

Insert the rubber gasket over the assembled button/fob face.

Insert the electronics component into the new fob face.

Snap the front and back together and test the functions on your vehicle to make sure everything is working properly. Have the new blank cut at your favorite store ($2.00 charge for this key at a locksmith shop nearby. Any place that cuts keys could have done it.)

I had the positive battery end changed on my 2003 Toyota Corolla and when new ends were connected the alarm starts and won't stop...I can't turn it off by the remote....I can't even lock or unlock my doors...

Its possible the remote code was changed after install which required a learn and the learn was erased when battery power was lost.

If this is an add-on aftermarket alarm system, the best hope is that somewhere under the dashboard or near the left kickpanel by the floor you see/find a small button mounted there. This is usually the most common install for the override switch by most alarm installers. Turning the key to the ON position then pressing the button and holding for 2-5 seconds will shut the alarm down in most cases if it has such a button.
If it does not have a button, or this is a factory alarm system, its possible the alarm control module fuse has blown or the module itself is stuck or failed, or the receiver for the remote is not seeing the remote. Recheck the connections at the battery, if its an add-on alarm there may have been a constant power loop attatched to the cable that is required to power the receiver/module and was accidentally left off. checking all fuses may also yield a blown fuse that feeds the alarm system controls.

Stuck in low gear

If you have a push button you may have broken the vacum line that controls the transfer case. It is on top so hard to get to but a cheep fix.
If you have a floor shift when you were stuck you may have a damaged the linkage. The linkage can be adjusfed to shift in gear. You may need to get new linkage.

My garage opener remote on my 2003 santa fe just stopped working. How can I fix it?

There is a battery in the remote. If the battery gets old the remote will stop working.Replace the battery and check. Also if your battery is new but still the problem is there then, try to open the garage door by keeping less distance between remote as well as the garage door. Also there is a sensor in the garage door.If that sensor is not functioning then this can be one issue. In some cases the internal remote circuit gets short,in that case the remote needs replacement. But does the garage door sensor light shows any sign of getting connection from remote when you press the remote button.Open the door and try to close the door with remote and check. As per the problem,in most cases its weak battery related problem, and replacing the battery solves the problem. You can try all the possibilities and see which one helps.Thanks.Helpmech.

2001 Santa Fe.Remote keyless stopped working. No lock, no unlock. Replaced transmitter battery, LEDs light up as usual. Manual key and manual lock/unlock switches work fine. Thanks in advance!!

some time the buttons on the remote get worn out and it will light up but it wont unlock or lock. you can just buy a new case and switch the piece inside. If you have another remote try to see if that one works if it does then the remote case is your problem

Michael, Per your description, it sounds like the deck lid button on your remote may be stuck. Remove the cover and reassemble, make sure the button is free to move in and out.
Let me know.
