Toyota estima: shift lock override?

Hi, i need to override the shift lock on my 92 auto estima. the key has snapped in the ignition, so ive started it up using a flat head in the plastic starter behind the ignition barrel. all fine, it starts as usual, but wont get into gear, the shift lock is now permantly on.
any help appreciated, thanks.

its still stranded at the moment and im back at home so i cant check!

thanks for replying so quickly- i take it there are two possible causes then?

i did consider that it could be an issue with the brake-transmission system (eg i could have knocked the cable whilst fiddling with the ignition- although visually this doesnt appear to be case) rather than the cause being directly linked to the bypassing of the ignition.

    will check tommorrow, thanks.

I have the same problem with my 1992 Previa in the garage it starts and runs fine the brake lights do work but I do not hear the click went I depress the brake pedal and I cannot move it out of park. Nobody seems to know what to do except to disconnect the shift cable and manually put it in neutral and tow it in for service. Any Help would be appreciated.

OK, it looks like the shift interlock cable is compromised. Look under the steering column for a bracket, with a cable, and two adjusting nuts. Then get back to me.

Did you get check it out?

  • Toyota Ed May 11, 2010

Most all cars now have what we call the "shift interlock" system. This places the necessity of having one's foot firmly on the brake BEFORE one can shift the vehicle out of park. If the brake light fuse is blown, the shifter will not come out of park, as the shift release solenoid is not activated.

I need to know one thing before I can issue you a good solution...Do the Brake Lights work? The shift lock and the brake lights are on the same circuit.

SOURCE: toyota lucida estima td wont start on could mornings

It may be the starter motor contacts which are worn. I have done this twice (on 2 different estima's myself. The starter will not turn or not properly. New contacts for these Denso starters are available on ebay from nipponnev for about £10 delivered and take about 1 hour to fit. No need to buy another starter. Hope this helps. Regards, Paul

1994 toyota estima intermittant start problem. makes click

This could be a grounding problem. Check all battery connections. Also check motor to body ground strap for corrosion. Check battery to motor ground and battery to body ground. Even if the ground looks allright it can be corroder underneath, so you have to take the ground bolt off to clean it.

We have a 1989 toyota camry the key will not turn to start the car. It has a button on top of the stering column to release the key when you turn the car off and normally when you put the key in you have...

Sounds like the ignition barrel has failed.
If you replace any part you must ensure that the key and the transducer ring are matched. If not, the immobiliser will come on and you will never start the car.
Get a diagnostic test to verify the immobiliser is turning off.

Gear lever stuck on '96 Toyota Lucida Estima

Automati Estimas have a safety device that locks the gear lever in 'park' until the brake pedal is pressed. Turn on the ignition and check that the brake lights are working, as the lock works on the same circuit. There may be a problem with the wiring to the lock mechanism
