If you are talking about removing the steering wheel, you need a special puller after you remove the nut on the shaft.

SOURCE: turn signal switch replacement on 93 buick park avenue

The steering wheel does have to come off.
Below is the process for replacing your turnsignal switch and the special tools needed.

Many vehicles use a turn signal switch that is separate from the multifunction switch. The steering wheel will have to be removed to gain access to the turn signal switch on these vehicles. The following procedure is a common method of turn signal switch replacement:

  • Place the fender covers on the fenders.
  • Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  • Remove the steering column trim.
  • Remove the horn pad from the steering wheel.
f_aee_cc14.28.jpg Steering wheel attachment. Courtesy of General Motors Corporation, Service Technology Group.
  • Remove the steering wheel and horn collar.
  • Use a suitable puller to remove the steering wheel.
  • With a suitable compressor, compress the preload spring to the lock plate. Compress the spring only enough to remove the snap ring.
f_aee_cc14.29.jpg To remove the snap ring, use the compressing tool to relieve the pressure against the snap ring. Courtesy of General Motors Corporation, Service Technology Group.
  • Use a pick and a small flat blade screwdriver to remove the snap ring.
  • Remove the lock plate, horn contact carrier, and spring.
  • Remove the bolts at the upper steering column support and the upper mounting bracket from the column.
  • Disconnect the turn signal wiring connector.
  • Wrap tape around the wire and connector.
  • Remove the hazard warning knob from the column.
  • Remove the switch retaining screws and remove the switch.
f_aee_cc14.30.jpg Remove the turn signal switch from the column. Courtesy of Chrysler Corporation.
  • Replace the switch and reverse these procedures for reinstallation.
On vehicles equipped with cornering lights, the turn signal switch has an additional set of contacts that operate the cornering light circuit only. The contacts can receive voltage from either the ignition switch or the headlight switch. If the ignition switch provides the power, the cornering lights will be activated any time the turn signals are used. If the contacts receive the voltage from the headlight switch, the cornering lights do not operate unless the headlight switch is in the PARK or HEADLIGHT position.
The most common complaints attributable to the flasher are too fast or too slow of a flashing rate. If the flasher is of the wrong type and rating, the amount of time required to heat the coil will differ from what the manufacturer designed into the circuit. Also, newer flashers that use electronic circuits will flash at an increased speed if one of the turn signal bulbs is burned out or the circuit is defective. If the flasher is rated higher than required, the flashing rate is reduced because it takes longer for the current to heat the coil.
Check the size and type of light bulbs in the circuit. Use only the lamp size recommended by the manufacturer. If these checks do not correct the problem, test the generator output. Higher or lower voltage output than specified may cause the flasher rate to be incorrect. If the charging system output is within specifications, check for excessive resistance in the turn signal circuit. Check both sides of the circuit.
If none of the turn signals operate, check the fuse. Next, check the flasher. Remove the flasher from the fuse box. Connect a jumper wire across the fuse box terminals. If the turn signal lamp operates with the lever in either indicator position, the flasher is faulty. If the lights still do not illuminate, test the turn signal switch.

. I need to replace the ignition switch on my 1995 g20 sports van

This could be a challenge for a novice so if you don't feel comfortable with your ability, seek help from a trusted shop.
You will need some special tools to get the job done. Steering wheel puller, lock ring tool, phillips screwdriver, torx bit #30, flathead screwdriver, sockets/socket wrench, snap ring pliers.

First thing is to take the neg. battery cable loose. The airbag is located on the steering wheel and attached with 4 #30 torx headed screws from the back side. Remove and unclip the airbag and horn connections from the module. Remove the steering wheel nut with the 13/16 socket wrench or equal. Affix the steering wheel puller to the steering wheel--remove same. Affix lock ring removal tool and depress lock ring. Remove snap ring from base of lock ring on steering shaft. Remove 2 phillips head screws from lock ring located at approx. 11:00 o'clock and 7:00 o'clock of the lock ring. Remove lock ring.
Now remove the turn signal switch. It is attached with 3 phillips screws. There is also a small phillips screw holding the turn signal indicator lever in place. remove the screw and bracket on the indicator then remove the 3 screws holding the switch. The turn signal switch should be able to be pulled out enough to access the screw holding the ignition switch in place. Don't get too aggressive with it but gently pull it out enough to get in there.
On the right side if the ignition pot is a couple of copper contacts that are in a plastic holder. These are for the buzzer that tells you your key is in the ignition. It pulls straight out with little effort. Locate the screw and Remove--it will be about 2-3 " long and it is what holds the ignition switch in place. You should be able to pull the switch assy. out of the column at this point. Replace with new switch and reinstall the holding screw. put the contacts back in if you want it to buzz when you leave the key in or have it on ACC. It won't hurt anything if you leave it out to avoid the buzzer.
Reinstall everything as removed making sure to put the steering wheel back on straight and tighten nut to proper specs.
You can rent the special tools needed most of the time from auto parts stores, see them for the details or conditions-(Auto Zone, Advance, O'reilley) just to name a few that have loan-a-tool.

How to remove ignition switch from 83 jeep cj7

you will need to remove the steering wheel, and remove the compression plate and then remove the hazard button and the blinker lever and then remove the turn signal switch plate,, then you will see a small screw going down into the column ( right where the ignition switch body is ),, remove this screw and the ingition lock will pull straight out. put new lock in and reverse tear down instructions and you are good to go.
( NOTE: the steering wheel will need a steering wheel puller to remove -- and the compression plate will need a compression tool to remove and install the small lock ring from the steering wheel shaft --- these tools can be bought at your local auto parts store or they can be rented at your local tool rental store ).

My ignition switch is jammed on my 1985 monte carlo any suggeestions

you will have to replace the lock cylinder in the steering column. This is a diy job, if you can borrow or rent 2 tools. One is a steering wheel puller, and the other is a lock plate depressor. Some part stores will loan/rent these tools. Once you have the tools proceed as follows: 1 remove steering wheel with steering wheel puller
2 install lock plate depressor and depress the lock plate to remove the retaining ring. 3 Remove the turn signal lever and hazard light button, then the three screws that hold the turn signal switch, pull up on the switch and push it out of the way. You may have to get under the dash and unplug the harness to the switch to get enough slack to clear the steering column. 4 remove the lock cylinder retaining bolt then slide the lock out. slide the new lock in replace the retaining bolt and reassemble the column.
