Whirling sound coming from the engine

There is a fairly loud whirling sound coming from the engine and it gets louder when I press the gas. The engine appears to be running fine and the gauges look OK. What is this sound?

Same problem on mine. i had a tune up done to the engine and they pinched the PVC hose from the air cleaner to the intake manifold. It was taken off and pinched backwards. Check the PVC valve and hose to make sure there are no restrictions

97 expedition 5.4 doesnt idle very good

Surging idle is usually caused by vacuum leaks. Ford 5.4L engines are notorious for the PCV hose elbow leaking back behind the throttle body.

The PCV tube goes from the right (passenger) side valve cover and loops around behind the valve body. Inspect this hose on BOTH ends.

If the noise is just a spinning sound and not a grinding, than you're starter solinoid is probably bad.
You're best bet is to replace the starter. Hope this helps.

Whirling Noise

Sounds like fuel pump pressurizing the fuel system. They do that for 2-3 seconds and then it stops (for fuel injected vehicles).

92 toyota celica whirling sound

Without hearing it, it is hard to tell. But, I would first be looking at the idler pulley bearing, they have been known to fail; and make noise. Remove the idler pulley, and spin it manually. If it feels rough, and makes any noise, it is bad.
