Question about 2003 Land Rover Freelander

Freelander wont start grrrr

Hi i have a freelander 1998 not a lot of miles on it for age as just a town car if you know what i mean , other day wouldnt start unless jumped start so i got new battery as was needing one anyway , still got same problem wont start need about 20 turns to fire it up , even when running a while if i stop takes time firing up again ? any idea plzzzzz just spent fortune on head gassket 8 month ago and hoping it aint anything serious again ] any help ne grateful

    hi thanks for reply , ye does misfire slightly . had enuf of the dam thing as took ages to start then i stalled it at lights then took ages again to start grrrrrrr so he is now in garage hopefuly it just points and plugs etc which getting replaced today, hopefuly aint to expensive

    ouch...this just after doing the head, at least we know your starter motor is in good working order ! but that would have been the cheapest and easiest no doubt !

    ok lets check the following :
    1. when it runs, have you noticed if you have decreased power ? a misfire or does it **** ?
    2. Either get a compression test done or buy a compression tester and check it. ( assuming this is a petrol model and not diesel ). To check the compression do the following :

    get a compression tester, they arent expensive, remove the first sparkplug, ataach the compression tester (here after just called a tester) where the spark plug goes in, remove the HT leads (calbes delivering power to the plugs) off all other plugs. then crank the motor for about4 or 5 five revolutions, take a reading, write it down.
    Repeat with all cylinders.

    Firstly, the readings on ALL cylinders must be relatively close to each other, if one or more are significantly lower than the others your rings are worn and you dont have compression. this will lead to problems startings and low power.

    this will call for an engine overhaul which can become pricey.

    Of compresison is fine (get the ideal reading from a land rover agent) you next stop would be the engine timing. Wrong timing causes low power and can cause starting issues. If it is electronic ignition (1998 model more than likely) a decent mechanic will be able to check it and set is should it be wrong.

    Lastly if the above is in order check the feul supply to the engine..
    this is my most likely scenario since low copression shouldnt cause hot starting to fail and compresison rings that fail normally come over time, the problem progressively becomes worse over time. Just check the fuel filter for blockage... you may need to get a new one (not too pricey)...or you could have a feul pump problem...but this is will again be indicated by either low performance or jerking since there isnt enough feul getting to the engine..

    all of this assumes you have a petrol landy....

This is really one of them that you can spend hundreds and still miss the problem. This is the order that things need to be checked. Start cheap first. But before anything, hook a fuel gauge to the fuel rail and let it run but keep and eye on the pressure. Any eratic movements of the gauge would put the blame on the fuel pump of filter. And have the timing checked. with high miles will need new timing belt. It wouldnt hurt to have a compression test done too. Also is there exhaust coming from the tail pipe adiquitly if not then your catalytic converter is stoped up or about to.

This list does not mean go buy all that. Its just check points for now.


1 air cleaner
2 fuel filter
3 PCV valve
4 throttle sensor.
5 crank and cam sensors
6 MASS airflow sensor
7 spark plug and wires.

sorry for the long to do list but like i said this is one of them probs that could be many things.

it's a starter motor problem, the solenoid contact inside the starter
is dirty give it a good cleanup with a sand paper and it should be fine. I have the same starting problem, I just cleanup the copper contacts and presto! starts in one click. or you can buy a starter

Hi there. when jump starting a car you are supposed to put the earth lead on a metal part (engine block or gearbox) so i dont think you have done any damage..
good quality jump leads are what is needed ( thick ones)

if you have a battery charger then that would be best depending on the ampage might need charging for 24hrs at least..

take a rubber mallot and lightly pound on the middle of the tank while starting. if it starts it is the fuel pump
