The ignition in my 1999 Volkswagen Beetle has stopped working. THe car will only run when bump started and after turned off won't work until bump started again. When the key is turned the only things that come on and work are the dashboard lights and the stereo. The windows and sunroof will not close, and obviously nothing else works. I've replaced the ignition switch and checked all the fuses, which all seem to be in good condition.

Well, the beetle itself has a weak connector on the AC pump itself. You'll need to check the connector on the pump. It sits right on the top just to where you can get it. If it gets any type of oil or water on it will drive you NUTS. Mine did the same thing to me. I unplugged it and cleaned both the connector and the plug itself with a toothbrush. I haven't had a single problem since. Also, since it's a 98, it's probably time to recharge the AC anyways. You can get a recharge kit at autozone for around $40 I believe or you could have a mechanic do it.
As for the gas cap; it's possible the linkage popped off the actuator. That being the case, I believe you'll have to remove the plastic wheel well under the passenger rear tire to get to it. I can't remember if you can get to it through the trunk, but I'm pretty sure you can't. It's not the greatest of designs to resist wear and tear but it does work. It's not a fun process of getting to it; but sometimes you gotta do what you gotta do. lol
I hope this helps you out!

The blinker button (hazard lights 4 way blinking) which is also a relay, is broken. with time the tention on the metal contacts gets loose so the contact only happens sometimes. pop it out with a thin screwdriver and replace it, 15$ on ebay...

Hi!!
Let me see if I got the problem straight, when you turn the ignition key the starter do not crank up. The accessories do not work, but, you must have power to the engine components, including the PCM, other wise, the engine would not start even if the starter gets jumped.
If the above is correct, your problem could be the starter relay or the Ignition Switch.
Let me know if I got the problem right or if there are any more symptoms? Also, when did the problem started?
I will need an email address to send you the procedure w/pictures and diagrams on how to troubleshoot the starting circuit and replace the ignition switch if necessary. This site only allows us to send images 150k max.
I'll be waiting for your response
