I have the same problem with my 2008 liberty limited. only 1400 kms. They've had it at the dealership for two weeks now and they can't seem to figure it out. Has anyone heard of a solution? They say it's electrical in nature. Resetting the computer didn't fix the problem.

Maybe the speed sensor on the transmission monitors transmission speed and sends info to computer to control shifting not sure if this is helpful

You have internal transmission damage I expect the clutches on third and fourth gear are wiped out. Its either that or a solenoid gone bad that holds those clutches pressure get it in a transmission shop soon to avoid whole transmission replacement costs.

What are some issues to look for that would cause car not to move in any gear, but you can feel it wants to go when raising rpms. Could this be the trans is gone or something minor. Helping a friend and...

Lets assume the park brake is off. If you put it in gear, forward or reverse and the engine revs but care doesn't move, you are either very low on automatic transmission fluid or the transmission is burned up. Check the fluid level. If normal smell the fluid. If it smells burned, there is no doubt that the transmission is burned up.

Try to check the trans mission gears of your 1995 jeep grand cherokee. The shift fork and the clutch sleeve of the trans mission is locking to the other gears .And then also check the starter motor and its solenoid.if the starter motor solenoid is destroyed or worn out replace .

Overdrive factors

When the car is just cruising along at approx.50+ MPH push the O/D button. You should feel the gears change higher and if you have an RPM guage then it should drop as well to fewer RPMs. This would be normal driving conditions. O/D will not kick in until the last regular gear (3rd or 4th depending on model)  had been shifted into. O/D automatically kicks out when slowing down and the transmission shifts to a lower gear. Thus the O/D has no function at slower speeds/gears and does not need to be shifted ( on or off ) except in the very first example given here.

Transmission does not want to shift up into a higher gear

I'd run a code check first, just to give you an idea if anything is leaving footprints in there. Transmission performance is somewhat related to engine performance but if you haven't serviced trans in a long time, do it.(if there is a lot of debris in there it may be time for a rebuild) Backfiring may be caused by an air leak in the exhaust manifold, allowing gasses in front of the cat to re-ignite. But, this could be caused by other things as well...that's why code read is important.

Transmission stays in first gear

it would cost less to replace the transmission than to have that one rebuilt shop around and see if you cant find a trans for it and have someone put it in for you
