1984 GMC Jimmy 2.8 l carburated stalls when going uphill

Jimmy runs fine on level and downhill, but it stalls out as if getting no fuel when I drive a 20 degree grade or higher. I replaced the fuel filter and it got a little better. It had been sitting for a couple of years. I had a different automatic transmission and cat and muffler put on it because they were bad. It was running fine for a little while, this problem only started after it had gone less than 20 miles after I bought it. I put cleaner in the fuel tank, used carb cleaner on the carburetor and removed the air filter, and there is moisture in the tail pipe. The engine knocks a little, but very little smoke and it doesn't overheat. I'm thinking fuel pump, but would like to know what you think as I may be overlooking something.

Remove the carb. and clean the float , and the float bowl . when gas setts to long it gums up that area and doesn't get the right amount of fuel into the bowl , so when you hit a hill its starving for fuel

I have to pump the accelerator several times before my 1984 2.8 will start especially uphill

When't the last time you replaced the fuel filter. If a while ago, that's the first place I'd look.

Car feels slugish when going up-hill, slight vibration, level and downhill runs ok, from start shifts through gears fine, just feels odd at times

problems you described would suggest you need to replace the spark plugs, a bad one tends to fail under loads like going up hill. the other thing you could try is to get a better fuel grade, that would correct pinging noises uphill. and throw in some fuel injector cleaner every 2000km, it makes a happy running engine

There is leak in the fuel system and air is coming in somwhere. Maybe the hoses with the injectors are leak.

It could be the fuel filter. Check fuel pressure and volume.
