I have a 1999, same problem.. each year.  I take it to the dealer, he replaces vaccum lines to the lock out hubs, and then next year.. when I need it.. same thing again. Now it is out of warrenty and I need to research it and find out how to fix it myself.

I also have problem with engaging 4wheel dr in 2001 Kia Sportage. Light comes on when I set it, but it is not working. Vehicle is a 5 speed manual transmission and is absolutely awful in snow, rain, ice or anything.....

mechanic says the hubs need replaced, you cannot order the parts, you must replace the entire axle. This is a $3300. problem.

My 1999 Kia sportage has been great except for the four wheel drive issue. It is a manual transmission however when i put it down into 4-Hi or 4-Lo it just simply won't engage the four wheel drive. I'm going to start some research on the vacuum lines first and then the solenoid. Sometimes you can hear a light grinding noise like it's trying to engage, but i am unsure of what's going on...............Please Help!!!

I fought with this problem every year since I had the Sportage. And it was so frustrating to find out just when you really needed it, that you did not have 4-wheel drive. I replaced the hubs with manual hubs and I wish I would have done it at the beginning. They work great and are 100% reliable. Bottom line.. the vacuum hubs were a great idea that just plain did not work reliably. Save yourself alot of grief and money and just replace the hubs. Less than $200 including paying someone to put then on and I now can rely on my Sportage when I need it.

I got ripped off by a dealer with a similar problem that came back two weeks later. $2.99 of vacuum hose later I fixed it myself. Check all the vacuum lines for rotted hoses before you fork out 3K and they are easy to do

2003 kia sportage 2l wont engage four wheel drive light comes on but doesnt engage

This is a long/hard one to answer as a few things can cause this. First, check the vacuum lines running from the engine down to the front axles for cracks, and make sure you have vacuum to the axle hub. Second, remove and inspect the front wheel bearings, they should be set to proper preload and there should be no signs of water in the hub. And last if there is water in the hub, that most likely means there is rust on the front axle, and the pitting caused by the rust will not allow vacuum to build up and ingage the four wheel drive. the later requires a new front hub kit $$$.

I don't know how to get my 2001 kia sportage into four wheel drive

On small shift behinde gear lever there is 3 settings. H4 = 4 wheel drive high range, L4 = 4 wheel drive low range, h2 = 2 wheel drive high range. as soon as jou engage to 4 wheel drive a green light on the dash board will appear to indicate that the car is in 4 wheel drive. if not check fuse - check air pipes at front wheels. Enjoy Willem Sa
