1997 Jeep Cherokee Leaking Oil whilst driving

Yesterday noticed after driving my car for about 10 mins oil was leaking out. When i turned the car off i could smell a burnt rubber kind of smell. None of my temp or other gauges were up and no check engine light was on.

It seems to only lose oil when there is pressure in the engine. The leak seems to be coming from back of the engine block. Not a stream just a drop at the time.

My brother changed the oil filter yesterday as the seal was broken and he was talking about changing the sump and oil pump seals as well, to rule out some problems. What would you suggest ????

Not sure whether just to take it to the mechanic or get my brother to change these few things first. Don't really have a lot of spare cash at the moment.

I am not only driving it to work which is 4km from home and topping up oil everyday.

Thanks

Mel

This could be the rear main seal on the crank shaft that is leaking, clean around all the areas completely to isolate the leak.  There are some oil additives available at your parts store that work to cause swelling of the seal to re-seal it.  This may or may not work, but it may slow the leak.

This same thing happened to me note:it ended up being my oil pan gasket and transmission pan gasket-but i started off changing the ones your brother are talking about---- along with the valve cover gasket just to be sure. Its Always good to do as much as you can to avoid expensive repair shops as much as possible with or without having the money -- it sounds expensive but it WASNOT --i got all those gaskets for about 23.50 {its worth it) from advance auto parts it might have been cheaper-- and since i new this average mechanic from around the neighborhood i onlyhad to pay him 50 dollars labor fee super cheap but still you have your brother who is helping for free i hope---- which mean youll be savig even more money than i did and this is very important to DEFINITLY to do as well--go to advance auto parts and tell the clerk you want a bottle of REAR MAIN SEAL REPAIR fluid--- it will have this name on a black bottle with red label--- for about 6 or 12 bucks--- you pour the whole bottle in where you put your oil (LET YOUR ENGINGE LEAK ABOUT A HALF A QUART OF OIL IF YOU HAVE IT FULL OF OIL ALREADY)before pouring the seal repair fliud in ----this stuff absolutly works i dont care what no one says bad about it either---start driving a gain after changing all those gaskets and puting the rear main seal fluid in i GUANRATEE YOU this will FIXYA!!!!!!!! it might continue leaking-- a little--around that rear main seal but that fluid needs 3 weeks or 3000 miles to seal that whole or gasket leak that you have back there-- those chemicals are harmless to the engine to--but willslowly be resealing your rear main seal so you might want to keep one quart of oil with you in the mean time to pour alittle here and there will those chemicals go to work--i promise you this is waaaay cheaper as it get to fix this problem repair shop price for rear main seal replacment is about 240.00 to 350.00 labor only and depending on where you go it may be higher.......

on the oil leak issue, i would check the valve covers to see if the oil is coming from there, these have a tendecy to leak on high mileage vehichles, also check the oil sending unit, i believe this is located close to your oil filter, also, check the oil pan gasket for leakage, some of these leak in the front of the pan, under the water pump area, on the coolant issue, check all of the hose connections to make sure it is not leaking from 1 of them, if they check out ok, i would check the oil on the oil dip stick to make sure that it is not foamy, or whiteish looking, if so, coolant is getting into the oil, this could be a blown head gasket, or intake manifold gasket leaking, or cracked cylinder, hope that this information has helped you, and also hope that the problem is a minor one to fix.

Lots of oil leaking under the Jeep. Down to no oil right now. Rainbow trail, etc. Want to know worst case scenario...ballpark cost to fix, etc.

Could be a simple fix. Have you found where the oil is leaking from? I had a 93 Grand Cherokee that was leaking oil badly and I found it to be the oil pressure switch that was leaking all that oil. It only cost a few dollars to fix. Check exactly what is leaking first to determine what it will cost.

Sounds like either a bad water pump or a stuck thermostat. Stop driving this vehicle unless you can afford a replacement. In the meanwhile get it to a garage and have them look at it, also get the thermostat replaced.
