I need to change the fuel filter on my car, but I can't seem to find it at all. Do you know where it is located? And also I have been told that ther is one under the hood and one by the gas tank on the driver's side, is this true?

Re: Where is the fuel filter on a 1990 prelude?
Yes. there is a large main inline filter right next to the gas tank and a smaller filter at the fuel inlet of the carbuerator. this one usually doesn't need changed as often as the main filter, about every 50k miles or so

old carb type do suffer from flowt problems, also people dont change the filters regularly so the inline carb filter blocks up., you would need to remove the carb and take the float chamber housing off. check the condition of the floats, and check the valve, if there is what looks like wet/dry dust in the float chamber then the filter has failed and you will need to clean the jets, you will need a few cans of carb cleaner or a big can of spray to clean it out. change the filters depending on carb fitted, there can be a filter above the valve or the fuel in line to the carb, also the main filter. replace the seals and refit when clean, would also at some point remove the tank and clean it out.
This sounds like a float problem. The carbs have a fuel chamber each and the amount of fuel in the chambers is controlled by a plastic float and needle valve. Carb will require stripping and cleaning and float adjusted. Not a job for DIY i'm afraid

could be all of the above. what you need to do is verify fuel pressure with a gauge set. or you can try a small spray of ether engine starter. if the engine starts and then stalls you know its something relating to fuel. but without a gauge its going to be impossible to determine which part
Hello Kisha...These fuel filters are found inside a metal bracket under the left rear of the car. Before changing the fuel filter, loosen or remove the gas cap; this will equalize pressure within the system. Some will have washers, usually copper on the connections. They should be replaced also.
This is what the filter looks like. Hope this answers your question, thanks for useing fixya.
you can pull fuel injector fuses and remove the gas cap but try to start it a few times so it relieves the pressure that was there...if it does not work on some honda i put a rag underneath the fuel rail and open the large bango nut that connects the line to the fuel rail just crack it 3/4 turn till it leaks a little and let it squirt out the pressure just wear eye protection its pretty easy fuel filter to do..
I have had problems with my 89 prelude. I found that the problem wasn't with the fuel pump, rather the master relay. You will have voltage at the fuel pump with the fuel pump dicconnected, but when you connect the pump and put a electrical load on the circuit, the voltage drops. check current with the pump running and see if this is the case.
